Reading

When you read a novel do you read every word or do you skim for major plot points?

Re: Reading

  • it depends on the book.

for lighter fair like the preston & child novels, i skim.
but i read every word of michael chabon. when i was reading "cavalier & clay," i stopped many times just to process.

  • I read really fast, so I'm reading every word but I don't stop and think each word individually.  If I decide I'm getting bored, I might start skimming and if it stays boring, I won't slug through it anymore.
  • I read so slowly that I've been wondering if I'm doing it wrong.

Maybe I should quit moving my lips. <-- kidding (at least I think so)

  • I read every word of a novel.  I mean, that's what they're there for.  Right?
That's like watching a movie on fast forward.  (Which is fine for porn, of course.)

My step-mom does the speed reading thing and can get through a Harry Potter sized novel in less than a day.  I don't understand how she gets any joy out of it.  But it served her well for law school.

  • I'm more like Varuna.
But I'll also say that I do read all of the words, but Idon't read all of the words on a page in order.  This is *not* intentional, and it's actually, from some testing I had done once-upon-a-time, related to a mild LD that I told them not to bother to diagnose me with.

As I have less and less time to read, I have less patience for really bad literature and I'm more likely to say "this is boring" and quit.

It better be good or it's going to be donated.

  • I read every word. And I hold no truck with boring novels, or badly edited ones, or badly written ones. I'm on to the next.

I read fairly quickly - I can do 100-200 pages in a day - but it's not speed reading, it's just how I process words.

H reads super slow. Our enjoyment of books isn't any different, just how many we get through in a year.

  • I read every word, except for romance novels or books of essays.  And yes, sadly I read books of essays for fun . . . I read one recently on the show "Firefly" and all its academic qualities.  Good times.

Romance novels I read when I need to laugh at bad literature, so I just skim, mock it, and move on.  I have yet to find a well written one, but then again I haven't been searching that terribly hard.

  • I read fairly fast and read every word.  I usually read about an hour and a half a day because I'm on the train that long, so I can get through an average sized novel in about 4 days.  Except most of the books I've read this year have been beasts.

  • I read fast, but not speed reading.  I like to think I read every word, but sometimes I catch myself and have to go back.  I'm reading the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, so sometimes I get a boring one and it slows me waaaaaaaaaaaaay down.  Books from that list are the only ones I won't give up on.  I like being able to check them off :)
  • It depends on how interesting the book is. The words stop making sense if I'm bored, but if I'm into the book I read and absorb every word. I'm still not a fast reader though.
