I am getting ready to meet with a graphic designer to design our invites. Like all traditional invites we are including a reply card. Am I allowed to ask what they will be having for dinner? I am having 2 entree options and want to make sure that I have enough for both. Is that tacky? Does any one have an alternative suggestion?

    If you are having a sit down dinner where the caterer will be providing one entry per person it is essential. It's not tacky at all! The caterer will want a final head count: 80 Chickens and 30 Beefs or whatever.

    Something like:

    __________________ Accepts with pleasure
    __________________ Declines with regret

    __Chicken  __ Beef

    The only alternative would be to only have one dinner option- whether its one entry or a double entry plate because then people are all getting the same meal so it doesn't matter.

    If you only need to know the number of each type of meal and don't need them to designate chicken vs beef it is fine. :-) GL!

    I think if you are having a decent amount of kids at the wedding and they have a "childs" option meal then add that to your card:

    ___Chicken   _____ Beef    ____Child

    Using the phrase "initial meal choice" may actually be prudent when making your seating chart.  Yes, the chef/kitchen staff only needs to know how many of each meal to prepare.  However, some venues want the servers to know how many of each meal choice goes to each table.  When you make your table arrangements, you can now figure out how many beef and chicken meals will be needed at each table.

    I am having a pretty small wedding, every one that will be there will like the meal choice so it is pointless to offer something that no one is going to pick.

    How small is small?

    If you honestly know that each one of your guests would prefer to eat chicken (or whatever) that day, well then, wow.

    I often prefer a vegetarian meal to a banquet hall meat option, and I know I'm not alone on that.

    Aside from the meal debate, I would change the word regrets to declines. Stating regrets puts emotion behind something that should be purely factual.

    115 people is not a small wedding by any means. Adding a vegetarian option is the courteous thing to do, and your caterer shouldn't charge you any more for this option.

    But wow, I'm so glad to know that you are aware of 115 people and their meal preferences.
