Booking

Hello Everyone,

I have been stalking this board for almost a year. I have set a date, made deposits, and then changed the date and the hotel. I have decided on the MGM Skyline Suite. My question is - is it better to book the travel as a package with hotel and air like through Expedia or book rooms directly with the hotel and flights from the airline. I actually do not want to book as a package because I need one room for my children for four nights then a room for us for two nights and then the Sklyine Suite for two nights. If I book as a package not sure if they can do the different rooms.

Re: Booking

  • I've never found package deals to be a better deal overall, which is probably why all the resorts, airlines, etc. push them so hard; there's a reason they do that instead of telling you hey just buy X from us and go over to Y to get your room cheaper. :-)

I was flying from the UK, booking via Expedia saved me around £1000/$1500 compared with booking directly with BA and the Cosmopolitan but it may depend on where your travelling from. I booked nine months in advance.
  • I'd book directly with the hotel.  Your room needs are more complicated than I'd trust to a package.  And to be honest, when I worked at a hotel (small, not anything like MGM!) I didn't know what someone paid expedia, I saw what expedia paid the hotel, and if we were sold out I'd put those folks in the less desirable rooms- those by the stairs/elevator/exercise room, etc- and place my return/membership guests in the best.
  • I often book flight+car at the same time when necessary, but haven't found flight+hotel to be a big moneysaver. But as somebody else says, a lot depends on where you're flying from, and Southwest Vacations has done a great job with packaging in Las Vegas.

Price them both out, and ask the reservations line at MGM--they might have some insight specific to their system--ie they might recommend booking with the airline for your kids' room so that the number of nights align with the flight dates, but booking through them for the more complicated reservation.
