Just Engaged and Proposals

Newly Engaged

I recently got engaged last week and it came as a total surprise to me. Marriage was talked about due to the fact that my now Fiance is in the Army but we didn't have any real plans for what we wanted to happen. To make a long story short, we're both only 21 and the wedding is set to take place next year. I never thought that I'd be getting ready to plan a wedding but here I am and I am so clueless as to where to start. Any suggestions???

Re: Newly Engaged

  • Congratulations! Start by setting a budget - that will determine what you can afford to host. Then look at your guest list. From there, you can pick a venue and a time of day. Good luck and happy planning!
  • Thank you! I'm going to start coming up with a list of guests. We definitely want our wedding to be intimate, mostly family and a few close friends. Maybe 50 guests at the most?
  • Congrats!

Like KIS mentioned, set your budget first.  You will need to sit down with your FI & make a list of priorities for your wedding - this will help you when making budget choices.

The Budget & DIY board is a great place to find projects and budget-savvy ideas other brides have used.  The search feature on the upper right hand side is an invaluable tool for this!

My favorite board on TK is the Etiquette board.  The ladies over there can come across as blunt sometimes but they're willing to be honest with you about things that your friends and family might not be because they don't want to hurt your feelings.

  • Congrats! I agree with the previous posters, setting your budget is the most important thing. Everything else stems off of deciding what you can afford to spend.
  • Congrats!!!! Figure out how much you want to spend (give yourself a cushion in case things come up), then figure out who you want to invite. This will give you an idea of what you can afford to host - you can take the planning from there.

  • Thank you for responding. I'm going to talk things over with my Fiance and see if we can come up with a budget. We know for sure that we only want to invite close family members and friends, so around 50 people (75 at the most and that's pushing it for us). I have an idea of what colors I want to go for (black, cream and maybe champagne gold) since he'll be in his dress blues (Army branch).
