Music to open up dancing and group dances

What is everyone using as the song to kind of 'kick off" the open dancing?  I've been having a hard time figuring out something.  Better to go with something modern?  or something more classic to try to get some of the older people up, too?  Thoughts?

Also, my mom is really pushing us to play the Electric Slide during the open dancing.  Are there any other group dances like that that are a little more current or popular for group dancing?  Or is the Electric Slide something that won't cause people won't groan and roll their eyes?

Music is so subjective, I find it hard to know what people would like!

    We had "Party Rock Anthem" as our kick-off for the party portion of the evening.  It was a LMFAO song that had just come out and was a big hit around our wedding date.

    If you want some more modern versions of electric slide you can do the Cupid Shuffle, The Wobble, or the Casper Cha-Cha Slide.

    I believe that playing one or two line dance songs in the beginning of the reception will help to get people out on the dance floor.  I have been to both weddings that had and didn't have line dances and then one's that did had more people out on the floor all night then the one's that didn't.

    This definitely seems like something the DJ  you're paying should be able to help you with!

    You either have a dancing crowd, or you don't. I don't think the first few songs really make a difference.

    DH & I don't come from circles of friends and family who dance it up at weddings. It's just reality for some couples.

    If you have a bunch of people who love to dance, they'll dance to any group song. No worries.

    I would ask your DJ for suggestions. He should be able to help you with this.

    I like group songs to kick things off, because I'm pretty shy and won't go out for a dancable hip-hop song, but get me out with the cah-cha slide and I'll be likely to stay.

    If you don't like the line-dance type songs, something like "Footloose" can draw the shy dancers out in a similar way.

    Your DJ probably has some good ideas for this, too.

    I love you for this.. now to ask fiance if he'd do the wobble as our entrance song...

    I dont remember our exact song. But our band recommended that we stay with some songs that many generations would know. And transition to more modern/ Top 100 songs later in the night when some of the older guests have left.

    FWIW, the electric slide was on my "do not play" list.

    Examples: Come on Eileen, We are family, Build me up buttercup, anything by Queen, Madonna or Bon Jovi

    We went with "You Never Can Tell" by Chuck Berry, an oldie but a goodie that everybody knows.

    I didn't have a kickoff song.  I didn't even know there was such a thing!  Can't even remember what my DJ played.  We did have some audience participation songs.  Planning the wedding, I was against it and thought they were cheesy.....but at the last minute I told the DJ he could play one or two but if no one was joining in to cut the song short.  The dance floor was the most packed during those songs, so I'm glad we played!
