Wedding Woes

Welcome home from Vacation

We had a fantastic time at Burning Man. We relaxed, we reconnected, we had a really great time together. DD had fun with my mom and all was well.

Until we got home.

Bedbug infestation. I'd been getting bitten for a few weeks but inspection of the bed showed nothing when we first looked. Then Tuesday night one was walking across the bed as I was ready to get in.

The exterminator is coming tomorrow (building is paying for it) and then again in 3 weeks. In the mean time, H and I have been sleeping on an air mattress in the living room, we had to empty out EVERYTHING and bag everything we own. We ended up renting an extra storage unit for a month. We've got 3 bags of clothes (one of each of us) to live out of for the next several weeks.

Here are some highlights from this adventure:

1) emptying, washing, bagging and vacuuming everything we own even in not-infested rooms.
2) Saturday night our air mattress busted an internal rib and we ended up on a giant balloon. We had to get a new mattress yesterday.
3) Friday night the cat started walking funny. Like his back half was trying to catch up and be even with his front half so he's walking sideways. Every few steps he needs to sit and rest. He's been sleeping a LOT and only eating or drinking when I hold the plate/bowl to him. We take him to the vet tomorrow. We're preparing for the worst.

I will say, at least during all of this we haven't fought, which is amazing. We've been working together and getting things done as a team. But seriously, this blows.

  • Wow.  You need a drink or 10.

  • What a nightmare!  But yay for working as a team!  Share your secret, please.
  • Honestly, I'm not sure. I've been stepping up more and taking charge of who does what( which is a major fighting point for us. And I think the week we had just the two of us helped a lot. We talked a lot about US and our concerns. We actually listened to each other. We're continuing to do that.
  • yay for Burning Man and working together - boo for the rest.
  • boo for critters.
    Yay everything else.
  • Boo @ bedbugs.

    Vibes for the kitty.

  • My cat did that, and it was a stroke, they couldn't really do much for her.  But good news was she lived 6 more years (to be 20!) and she gradually got better.  She always walked a little crooked lol but otherwise the other symptoms improved over about 3/4 months.
  • @pegasuskat - I was wondering if it might have been a stroke. How did the vet determine it?
  • They did an MRI, but I think mostly just symptoms.  She would walk very sideways, and actually sometimes fall over, she was using the bathroom in the floor (she had never done that) and was very tired, just laying around.  They didn't do anything at all for it, told me if she got worse to bring her in and they could put her to sleep if she was suffering, but really nothing else.  She gradually did get better.
  • His kidneys are poor and he's hyperthyroid (medicated to get that under control) so poor guy is a bit of a mess. I hope that he's ok.

Thanks for letting me know about what you did with your cat.
  • I'm sorry about the cat and bedbugs, but yay for everything else.
