Petite bride

I fell in love with this dress:

I have been searching for dresses all this time that are knee length, thinking that, as a petite bride (5'1"), I would look best in a shorter dress.  My question is, should I have this dress altered to be knee length or will the full length dress look better on my frame?

Re: Petite bride

  • I think that dress would look fine on a shorter bride.  In fact, the long skirt might make your legs look longer.

  • As long as you buy a gown that isn't a dropped waist you can buy a long dress if you want to.

Personally, I don't care for that dress I think it looks a little like a night gown and may make you look like a little girl playing dress up.

  • I am petite as well (5'1") and originally wanted a shorter dress. I tried on about 6 or 7 and found they weren't doing me any favours.  A lot of them fall to mid-calf, which is the widest part of your leg so I found it made me look more "squat" than I actually am. That was just my experience.... so I suggest at least trying on a bunch of shorter dresses just to make sure you like the style. :)

I am pretty sure I'm going to go with Sottero and Midgley's Lyla dress, which is not super poofy (good for petite brides-- otherwise you can get lost in all of the volume!)
  • Thanks ladies! I appreciate your feedback.

Just googled your dress, mcbaine.  Beautiful!
  • I'm 5'2" and had initially wanted a shorter dress for the same reason. But I ended up with a floor-length dress and it actually made me look taller! Part of that I think is because it had a prominent decoration at the natural waist, and I wore heels, so the length of the skirt from top to bottom was nice and long. That dress has the same kind of waist detail, and it's super pretty!
  • Piping in as another petite bride! (I'm barely 5'). I also agree that a shorter dress might have the effect of actually making you look shorter. I think the dress you are considering is lovely, and think it would look best full length.

I recently came across a pic of a somewhat similar dress online that I love.

I was worried about wearing a dress with too much volume, but for what it's worth, I ended up with the Pronovias Pergola and absolutely adore it! Try a few different styles - you might be surprised what flatters you.

  •   I am 5' and I bought a full length gown. I found that ball gowns tended to be too much dress and I felt overwhelmed by them, but more form fitting gowns actually made me look taller.

      This is my gown.

  • Do a long dress. As a petite gal myself, a former fashion student, I can say that a short dress will likely do nothing but make you appear smaller
  • Definitely try on a few different styles!  Don't be afraid--you may be surprised at what you find!

Before I even stepped foot into a bridal salon, I scoured the web for weeks looking for dresses that I wanted to try.  Ironically, just about every dress that I picked out looked hideous on me!  I'm not quite petite (I'm 5'4"), but I have a very short torso, and most of the dresses I liked and thought would look good on me ended up not flattering me at all!!  One of my bridesmaids was insistent that I try on several different styles and shapes and I finally found one that I fell in love with!
I ended up finding a dress that was fitted around my torso, making it look longer (yay!), but flared out at the base of my hips.  It's so beautiful!

Good luck in your search!   Find what makes YOU feel stunning!

For the record, my vote is for a long dress!! :)
