Brides Beware: Keep track of guys' suit orders

I recently ordered suits from Jos A Banks.  I was told that they would be in within about two weeks and that alterations will typically take another two weeks.  After three weeks and only receiving about a 1/4th of the order, I checked online to see the status.  I was shocked to see that the suits were not due to be shipping until more than a month after my wedding.  After getting the run around for another 3 weeks, I was finally advised that they would not be able to get them in.  To make matters worse, there were no offers to fix the issue.  Luckily, I found nicer suits for less at Macy's.  I learned that you should always get a list of each guy's sizes when making a mass order of the suits.

  • Oh no! We were thinking of getting suits from there too. How much in advance of your wedding did you order them?
  • we are renting tuxes from mens whearhouse for the guys

We began the Order on 7/29 for a 10/12 wedding.  They finally told us that the suits would not make it in on 9/5.  Apparently the information was available before if we would have checked the online status.  I think the main issue that we were dealing with was wanting brown suits.  I have a feeling you would have a much larger selection and availability for grey or black.

  • That's so annoying!! I'm glad it worked out though! Were you buying or renting them?
  • We were buying suits since they had deals that it was only like $250 a suit.  We are doing an outdoor wedding and wanted it to be casual and for each of the guys to have a nice suit for the cost of a little more than a rental.  However, look at the Ralph Lauren suits at Macy's.  I lucked into a great deal after buying a $5 charitable contribution shopping pass.  It totally saved me $300 on the order.

  • @nolllinj Wow that's awesome! This is all very good to know. We were going to do the "buy suits" route too and wanted to do it when there was the Jos. offered the buy 3 get 1 free special or something that they do occasionally. I think ours are going to be black so like you said maybe that made a difference. If we still go with them I will make sure he gets them ordered MONTHS ahead of time. Thank you for the heads up!!
PS 10.12 is coming up!! :) Enjoy these next weeks!!
  • @svc2014:  Make sure they give you a list of which suit sizes go with which guy.  We had to order separates due to the guys wearing the larger sizes.  When they arrived, I had both dads saying the pants were not theirs.  Needless to say, the wrong sizes on pants were ordered, but they were spot on with the jacket sizes.  Oh and a friendly heads up, if you do decide to go with Jos, they have a one credit card policy.  We were a little surprised by that.  We had caught the deal of buy one suit get three free.  It just didn't work out.  Good luck in ordering!!  Once it gets down to the last 3 or 4 months time seems to fly by!!!
  • @nolllinj  Good advice!! You are answering lots of questions I had so I'm glad you posted this!
I bet it does! I'm looking forward to it :) Best wishes for smooth sailing in the remaining weeks! haha

Is it traditional for the dads' suits to match the groomsmen?  I am thinking of having the guys get suits too (will look at macy's on sale--thanks for the tip!).

Also, just curious, do you find that the guys were happier paying a bit more to buy a suit they could keep, as opposed to renting a tux?  On the one hand I think it makes sense; on the other hand you could be picking a suit they might not like for themselves (though I guess that's how it works with BM dresses).

Dads can wear whatever they want. Just like moms, they don't need to match the bridal party.

I also don't know any guy (sorry, OP) that would have any purpose for a brown suit ever again. Besides maybe a Halloween costume.

  • I also had a terrible time with Jos A. Bank and would totally advise against using them.  We also had an outdoor, more casual wedding so gray suits were more appropriate and also the last tux my fiance rented for a wedding was only $5 less than buying the suits, so all the guys agreed that was a great idea.

When we first went in they were incredibly helpful, said they do wedding parties all the time, all I had to do was pick a suit and color and then give them the names of everyone buying suits and then the guys could come in on their own time to get measured and place their order.  They even gave me the buy one get three free deal when it wasn't actually running.  Well, it all went downhill from there.  They never recorded any of the names, styles or colors, then could not look up any previous orders to get this info.  They gave my MIL, my FI and I the runaround whenever we tried to place an order and we were on the phone or waiting in the store for no less than 30 minutes at a time for them to figure out what the heck was going on!  They also shipped my brother the completely wrong suit and then only shipped him the right one the week before the wedding.

In the end, it wasn't the great deal it was supposed to be in the beginning, I really wished I would have shopped around and gone through Macy's or Kohls.  Oh well....
  • I just noticed that after we cancelled the Order on Monday, they shipped another piece and charged me (of which I have already paid all of it and been refunded) today.  This has been very annoying.

As for itsMS, the suits are Ralph Lauren neutral tan suits.  With my profession there are occasionally events that we go to where my fiance having another suit will be useful.  So, please keep your snide remarks to yourself.
