Wedding Woes

Travel Question

If you were flying out of a little airport that only has two commercial flights per day, how early would you be for your flight? Also consider that your flight is at 5:30 am and the airport is an hour away, so every additional moment of sleep granted to your darling wife driving you to this airport is greatly appreciated.

Re: Travel Question

  • An hour.  Our little airport isn't quite that small, but I refuse to get there more than an hour before anymore.
  • how much does it cost to park at the airport?
    how long is the trip?
are you and your lovely wife sharing one car, that you can't park it at the airport?

what time does the airport even open? There's no point in getting there at 3:30-4, if the TSA agent doesn't get there until 5.

I would try to be there by 4:30 at the latest. I'm also a very paranoid traveler and would rather rush and wait.
  • Yeah, I would say walk into the doors of the airport by 4:30, because they'll start boarding at 5:00.

  • No more than an hour, but agree to double check when the airport opens.

I still remember flying in/out of Greenville, NC. It was 2 double wides shoved together.  Everyone had to stand still while one person went through the medal detectors or they wouldn't work (this was 2000 and they had been flooded)

  • an hour. the ticket desk probably doesn't open up any earlier than that.
  • I flew out in and out of a tiny airport in WY once. This was pre TSA so it was hilarious to see that security wasn't open yet because the ticket agent was also the security guy. He had to wait until everyone had checked in. Then he stepped over to security and got us all through there. Then he walked us out to the plane and collected our boarding passes (that he had printed).

  • Also, when I flew into the airport I had reservations for a rental car. Our flight had been delayed (because it was hot and they announced that we were too heavy to fly in that heat, had to wait for sundown <---not comforting) so the Enterprise employee was already gone, but he taped a set of keys and a note with my name on it to the edge of the counter for me to find.

  • Airport website says that the ticket counter opens at 4:30. ::cries::

And then they close for a few hours and open again at 10am. Hee!

  • Oh, and I'm driving him because parking is still as much as it is at the budget lot of a big airport and he will be gone for two weeks. I think that's dumb. We would be more likely to fly out of that airport if parking were free or at least cheaper.

  • eh. I'm sure he'll make you get there at 4:30, but it's really not necessary. Little airports mean little planes, which means they totally don't start boarding 30 minutes before. I'm sure he's checking a bag (I mean, it IS Mr. Zsa we're talking about here.), so yeah, that will add a little bit of time, and I think there are actually TSA/Homeland security rules about limiting checked bags 30 minutes or so before the flight.

And yeah. I got to the stupid airport before 4am for my London trip. I was connecting (so the boarding pass the TSA looked at said Chicago). TSA didn't even open until 4:30. I totally could've slept another hour.

But hey- then you get TWO WHOLE WEEKS of peace and quiet and fun alone time and puppy love!

I'd say 4:30-4:45 - check with the airline or airport if there's a limit on checking a bag less than 30 minutes before the flight. I know the big airlines/airports have some 30 - 60 minute cut off.. It sucks that they kill you on parking. If it was only a couple of days, the money would probably be worth the extra hours of sleep.

my only experience with small airport/terminal was flying on our corporate jet, so the process was a little different.
  • Honestly, this is why we spent the night at one of the places w/ a cheap hotel stay and shuttle four our vacay...we drove to the city w/ the podunk airport, rented a room, and then just got the shuttle in the lobby @ odarkthirty
  • I got him there and made it home without falling asleep and hitting a tree. I usually don't get up until 7, so even though it is only 10:15 it's like 2pm on my internal clock. I'm late for lunch'!
