Is it usual to have to pay to have a rehearsal at your venue??

My fiance and I were pretty thrilled when we found our venue.  It is managed by a catering company and the company works with a third party for cakes, so we knocked out three things at once: venue, food, cake.

I recently contacted the company to see when I could schedule the rehearsal, and when they responded to my email they said that there is a $300 charge for the rehearsal.  Is this a usual concept for venues, or are we being duped?  At this point, we are paying enough for the venue and food that I am almost tempted either not to have a rehearsal or to just try to do it off site and wing it the day of the wedding.

  • It is really dependent upon your venue and the package you choose with them. Some venues offer the space for free or with your package and others offer it for extra.

  • Sounds logical. If it's a popular venue that could host other events during the time you'd need...then it makes sense to me.
  • We aren't doing a rehearsal and it would be a real hassle for our venue to have to set one up for us the night before and then take it back down  so it's not in the way of their Friday business so we'd be charged extra if we wanted it.   Many places do include a short rehearsal time but not all of them.
  • Okay.  I am not that familiar with some of these details, and it was not listed in the contract, so I thought I would inquire.  We might not do a rehearsal then, especially to save the money.
  • Is there anywhere else you can do the rehearsal? If you want to do one, it doesn't necessarily have to be at the venue. We are doing ours in our friend's back yard.

I agree with this. No where does it say you have to use the same place. Rehearsal dinners can just be at a restaurant or someone's house. We're having mine catered at my SIL's house.
