Can I use StDs as my invitations?

Hi Knotties! Little excited cause this is my first post on here. Any-who: My fiancé and I are both in college right now and are getting married at the end of May after graduation. I really like StD cards, think they are adorable and so much more cost effective than invitations. My idea is to use the StD cards, well postcards actually, as invites. Like right on the front instead of "Formal Invite to Follow", print "This is your Invitation"!" It will also direct people to our wedding website to RSVP, see where we are registered, see what hotels are reserved, finds maps, etc. and all the other typical enclosures you send with a wedding invite. What is your ideas on this? I'm on a really tight budget and I don't want to waste money on invites I think are just ridiculous.

  • Why not just skip the STDs and look into inexpensive wedding invitations.  Invitations don't have to be lavish or expensive.  You can go right to Michael's or some other craft store and buy a box kit and print them up yourself.

I think if you go the route you are thinking you are going to confuse a lot of people.  Also, what about RSVPs?  I mean they people could call you or email you but sometimes it is easier to keep track of who is and is not coming when you have a stack of cards sitting in front of you rather then having to search through emails or a bunch of random pieces of paper that you may have used to jot the name of the person down.

I second what Maggie said - I'd skip the STD rather than skip the invite.
If you buy them at Michael's and print them yourself you can go in and buy one box at a time with a 40% off coupon. Download their app and they can scan the coupon off your phone.
Or use VistaPrint (or similar, but I used VP) I got 5x7 flat invites and then postcards for the RSVP card, it was very const effective and I didn't have to print them at home - which was a plus for me. The post card saved on postage and together they did not require extra postage.
You can make your invites informal and fun if you choose - with the elements you like about STD but still with the proper info your guests will need.

    GL!

  • I agree with PPs. Skip the STD and just do an invitation instead. There are a lot of cost effective ways to do invitations.

Lots of craft stores (Michaels, JoAnns, Hobby Lobby) will have super easy and cheap boxed kits that you can buy. You just print them at home and assemble them. All of these stores always have coupons out too, so you can typically get them for at least 40% off.
Vistaprint is also a good alternative. We considered having our invitations done by them. The quality is still really good, but they're super cheap.
I ended up just making out invites myself in Photoshop. I bought cardstock on sale at JoAnns and just printed them at home.

    Good luck!
  • I know Hobby Lobby does 50% off invites a bunch too, so if you scout them out you can find an amazing deal. You can also find them at Walmart pretty cheap, especially if you're a clearance hunter like I am.
