Parents' names on invitation

My father and mother, who are still married, are hosting our wedding so their name will appear on the invitation. My mother's name is hyphenated and wants to use her hyphenated name on the invitation. From what I have read, the appropriate way to word the invitation is:

"Ms. Jane Jones-Smith and Mr. John Smith request the honor of your presence"

However, I think it is odd to list the woman first and to use the prefix "Ms." instead of "Mrs."

Thoughts? What would you think if you got an invitation that read "Mr. John Smith and Mrs. Jane Jones-Smith request the honor of your presence"?

Re: Parents' names on invitation

  • What does she prefer to be called?  If she prefers "Mrs."  then either "Mrs. Jane Jones-Smith and Mr. John Smith" or "Mr. John Smith and Mrs. Jane Jones-Smith" would be okay.

  • How formal is your invitation? Do you need to have it be Ms. and Mr. ?

    What about

Jane Jones-Smith and John Smith request the honor of your presence
  • I see no problem with using her full name, since that is how she wants it to be presented. I agree that calling her "Ms" seems odd, since she is being presented as half of a married couple in the wording. I think "Mrs." would be just fine.

  • I agree with allispain. To me Ms seems odd and possibly could be taken as she is divorced.

  • Just a heads up: full names, including middle, are used on invitations. Also, ask your mom for suggestions for her name. Betcha she has experience in this!

I have never seen middle names for the parents, only the bride and groom. I agree that Mrs. Jane Jones-Smith is fine.
