Gone Girl (Spoiler Alert)

edited September 2013 in Not Engaged Yet

First of all, sorry to all who commented to me in last Fridays "weekend plans" thread. I ended up getting swamped and didn't get a chance to get back into TK. H and I are safe from all major flooding, so no worries there!

Anyway - I was able to finally finish reading Gone Girl. I don't want to give too much away in case others here haven't read or haven't finished reading it. I am so annoyed. I really wasn't that into the book until about halfway through. Then things started to get interesting...and I became more invested in the characters. By the end I was really pissed.

1. I HATE the wife. I cannot believe she could turn out to be that manipulative. She is a horrible person.

2. I can't believe the husband chose to stay with her. I realize she is pregnant...but how can he live under the same roof as that woman, let alone sleep in the same bed???

3. I hate when books don't really end. I suppose the author is leaving it open for a second book, but seriously? You can't just stop on me like that with "I really wish he wouldn't have said that". I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!

Anyone else have thoughts to share on this book?

@bethsmiles, read it. It is a very emotion-provoking book, as you can tell, lol. And stop reading this post NOW because I might throw down some spoilers and I don't want to ruin it for you.

@allusive007, it got very interesting when you start actually hearing from the wife in the middle, but the last page or so was a HUGE WTF moment! Freaking unrealistic and psychotic of both of them if you ask me. I hear Gillian Flynn's other books are excellent, so I need to look into them ASAP. It's not too often that a book keeps me going like that one did, so I enjoyed it, even if I was so frustrated at the ending.

@Amapola14 - I'm gonna download it on my kindle! I can read it while my students take their tests this week.

  • @allusive007 - You should put 'spoiler' in your title so people who haven't read it yet know not to open this thread, just a heads up!

I hated -- HATED -- the end of this book. I felt like the author was fucking with me and my emotions and I didn't like it. I also felt really alone because everyone and their mother was raving over the whole thing. The end really ruined it for me.

I'm anxious to see how the movie turns out. Maybe they'll change the end somehow.

Was just about to say that.... thank you.
  • Gah! I totally agree Amapola14! Very frustrating, but I did enjoy the read. I 100% agree with you about the characters becoming unrealistic in the end. I noticed she had 2 previous books...and they had great reviews on Amazon. Maybe I'll start with one of those next. I heard they may be making Gone Girl into a movie...if that's the case then I think there would have to be a sequel (book or movie)
  • Wait...there's going to be a movie? I am pleased, maybe they can improve upon that ending a little bit, because damn.
  • Thanks for the tip Swazzle. Done & done!
  • allusive007 I actually threw something when I finished that book, it made me so angry.  I get that it could possily maybe be a bit more "real world" as opposed to "happily ever after" but MAN.  Any time anyone brings that book up I get all sorts of flustered again!!!

(side note: I would've thrown the book if I could've, but it was on my Kindle and I didn't want to risk damaging all my other books :) )

  • Oh - and her other books are good (Sharp Objects and Dark Places) - they are all equally twisted, but those did not get me going like Gone Girl did!

  • I read the book in March on vacation.  I did not like the book I wasn't happy with the ending and I felt like I completely wasted time reading it. Pretty disappointing.

  • I hated the ending!  I felt so let down at the end, but I will be interested to see what Hollywood does to it.  I can't see mass audiences being ok with the current ending.

Her other two books did not disappoint me though. I actually really liked Dark Places.  But I would say all three of her books have kind of a doom and gloom feel to them.  It makes me think she's pretty disturbed!

  • Now I'm really intrigued and I want to read this book! Maybe I'll have to hit up the library before our trip to Nashville this weekend.
  • For those who have read it, does anyone else think Ben Affleck's too old to play Nick in the movie? In the book, Nick describes himself as having a face you want to punch - a pretty boy, and he's not much of hard working man.  I just did not see Ben Affleck being this guy - I pictured someone younger, slimmer, and even more of a smug (but unintentional) face you'd want to punch.

  • I'm so glad to find this thread.  I kept reading recommendations for Gone Girl everywhere!!  So I tried it, and it wasn't bad for the first half, though I thought kind of predictable.  I hated the ending.  It totally ruined the book for me.  Made me feel like I wasted my time reading it.  I don't think I'll be trying anything else she's written since I can't be bothered after that, but it's so nice to hear that a lot of other people hated it too after all the rave reviews I read.

  • @missangelinamiley - I kinda saw Ryan Reynolds when thinking of a movie version of this book. Is Ben Affleck definitely going to play Nick? Maybe not my first pick, but definitely not my last.
  • @Amapola14 - Yep, Ben Affleck has been cast to play Nick.  I'm pretty happy about Neil Patrick Harris picked for Desi Collins though.  I thought I was thinking of Ryan Reynolds too for Nick but I was thinking of Ryan Gosling!

The whole cast list so far is here:
