still not sure about my dress

I tried my strapless dress in June and was measured in august. Dress hasn't been ordered yet. Went to look for strapless bras today so I'm not scrambling next year. Well, all the bras made my boobs into a shelf! I am self conscience of my bust size (34 G) and am starting to feel the dress with the cap sleeves will allow me to enjoy my day without having worry about a wardrobe malfunction.

So, ladies which dress do you like?

  • I think they're both lovely, but would lean towards the cap sleeve dress.  I can't really tell what the skirt is made out of that one though--I tried on a tea-length dress with a tulle skirt and it really made me feel like a ballerina (not the look I was going for). As someone with a a very similar hair color and skin tone to you I'm also going to say that personally I much preferred ivory over white so if the first option is only available in white and the skirt is made of tulle that would change my opinion of it a bit.   Have you tried on that other one too?  If not, definitely try it on regardless of how much enthusiasm you get for it here because things can look so different across different body types.

Also, you could look into getting straps added to the other one.  I REALLY did not want a strapless dress and they seem to make up about 90% of the options so I'm going to have straps added (I don't want to worry about a wardrobe malfunction and I honestly think I just look better in tops with straps).  I was able to order matching fabric along with my dress too so matching after the fact wouldn't have to be an issue.
  • I think both are lovely - I really like the ivory of the second one (and you look very happy in it!) though the detail work at the top of the first feels bit more special.

PP has a good point about getting straps added to your dress, if you'd prefer to be able to wear a regular non-strapless bra with it.

Is the dress a corset back or does it zip? What kind of built in support does it have (boning, etc.)? If it has enough structure to the top, you could always have your seamstress put in bra cups and not even have to worry about a strapless bra. Given your bust size, having a corset might actually be beneficial there, since that way you can ensure it's nice and snug on your wedding day. Your seamstress should be able to tell you whether this is valid possibility with your dress and bust size.

  • I'm a busty girl too and I think straps or sleeves would help you from worrying about falling out or having to adjust.

  • I love both! My dress has optional straps. Might go with them. My size is 38c.

  • I am a fan of straps...And its funny, my dress style is similar to yours, I picked out a tea length dress with a tulle skirt.  Mine does not currently have straps, but I am adding them.  My number one reason being I think strapless looks weird, but number two reason is I do not want to spend my wedding day pulling my dress up every ten minutes, and making sure I'm not flashing everyone!  You can always have them add straps to your strapless dress if you like the rest of it!  There are several different looks you could go with.  Me, I'm going with matching tulle.

You can pick out the best bra that you like and will be comfortable in (and doesn't make you resemble a shelf), and then pick out a strap style that will cover it. If you're already getting it altered, they will be able to do this.

  • I think both dresses are nice, but if you want the strapless I wouldn't worry about it as long as you get a good seamstress to fit the bodice properly against your body.  In the sample the bodice is too far away from your skin and needs to be fitted.  Also I think the sweetheart neckline will counteract any "shelf" look.
  • Thank you so much ladies! I do love my dress. The undergarments were my main concern. I will speak with the seamstress about adding cups or fitting the bodice tighter. Am going to a new shop Saturday to try their bras.

I rang the shop about the dress with sleeves and its twice the price of my dress! I can't afford that so would rather spend the money on straps and alterations. It will all work out, think i was panicked about my bust. I'm very self conscienous about the size and don't want it to enter the room before me...:)

  • I'm a 38H, and I was able to wear strapless with no problems.  Buy a good strapless bra (lindathebralady.com has a great selection for larger busts, but lanebryant has a really good strapless bra out now. Their old version was kinda crappy, but the one they are selling now is awesome!).

Also, talk to your seamstress about adding little snaps inside your dress and on your bra.   I had three small plastic snaps affixed to the inside of my dress, one at each corner, near where my underarm starts and one in the direct center of my chest, so it sort of pulled the dress against my body/bra so I didn't look like I had uniboob.  It worked like a dream, and my dress wasn't going anywhere.

Oh! That is a GREAT idea! Love it! Thank you so much for the website too. Feeling sooo much better about my dress. It will be ready for April/May. Eek!

Honestly once it's altered to your exact measurements I'm sure it will at least be a bit better! I was worried about that part of my dress too (but for the opposite reason - i.e. no boobs!) but once it was fitted to me it looked a LOT better! I also have to use a bit of that body tape stuff just to keep the one side a bit closer to my body (it's a one-shoulder dress). I would definitely talk to the person doing your alterations and see what they recommend doing :)
  • I love the capsleeves! My dress has a removable high neck/cap sleeve bolero but i am keeping it on all night (also have the busty problem) so i dont have to worry about picking my dress up all night bc it doesnt support me. I am sure as people have mentioned once it is custom tailored to your body it will be fine, but I just dont want to risk being uncomfortable. The lace cap sleeve/high neck is what attracted me to my dress in the first place :) I love the look!

  • I'm a 32G and I actually did not like the way I looked or felt with any sort of sleeve which is what I thought I'd end up needing due to the size of my bust. My dress was a modified sweetheart and strapless and thanks to my alterations lady, I had no issues with the dress falling down or my boobs falling out.

  • I'm a 40G myself and I wore a strapless dress. I bought an amazing stapless bra from Nordstroms. Keeps the girls up & in a natural shape. I don't remember tugging at my dress once the whole day or ever feeling like I was going to fall out. I did do a corset back (originally a zipper back but I had it converted), mainly because my weight was going up & down the month before the wedding within a 5 pound range. The corset back allowed me to have it tightened up to fit me perfect for that day and that probably helped too. I did have my MOH tighten the corset I think once or twice during the day but it wasn't a big deal.

That being said, get the dress you feel more comfortable in. Both of them are beautiful options.

  • I like the one with the sleeves. Too many wedding dress is strapless and it's refreshing to see something different plus I think you should go with what you feel comfortable and beautiful in.
  • I like the cap sleeve style. But also the suggestion of adding straps to the other one is good also!  I personally much prefer the look of a strap or sleeve.  but you look beautiful no matter what!
