To Clean &/or Preserve your dress?

I absolutely love my dress...now that the weddings over it's filthy- but I have no idea what I'm going to do with it-long term. Have you had your dress cleaned and preserved?! Is it worth it?

Re: To Clean &/or Preserve your dress?

  • It took me a whole year before I got around to getting my dressed cleaned and preserved.  I really contemplated selling it or donating it or chopping off the train to put in a shadow box.  But I couldn't bring myself to do any of that.

As far as if it is worth it...well I at least know that if I ever decide to do anything with the dress I know that it will be clean and protected in its box if that time ever comes.  Right now my dress is in its preserved box on the floor of my closet.  It is being used as a temporary shoe rack.

I would, however, get your dress cleaned no matter if you decide to preserve it or not.

  • I have no idea what I'll do with mine. Someone spilled red wine down the back (without telling me) and I don't know that I want to bother paying to have it cleaned and preserved. The humidity kind of killed the dress that day, as it rained all morning and hovered around 95 that evening, so it's pretty shot. And I wasn't terribly in love with it. So I may just donate it to Good Will.
  • I still have yet to do anything with my dress and it's been 11 months. I know it needs to be cleaned due to sweating while dancing and some of my tanner rubbed off a little on the inside of the dress. But to be honest, toying with the idea of spot treating dress and putting it in the washing maching on gentle. I know a photographer who put two dresses (both satin w/not too much embellishment) that has been used for a trash the dress photo session (mock brides, she wanted to do a demo shot for her portfolio) and she had the models in the mud, water and paintballs, they dresses came out clean, but she did wash them the same day which may have helped.

Yup, it took me a year also. I wanted to donate it, but now I cant seem to part with it.

  • I just had my year anniversary and still have not had my dress cleaned.  We also bought the guys' vests and ties off eBay, and we have H's, and my brother's have theirs.  One day I would like to have my dress and the vests and ties made into a quilt.  However, I have a feeling that day won't be anytime soon.
