Engagement Photos/Save the Dates

How does everyone feel about Engagement Photos and Save the Dates? Are they absolutely worth it or something you found you could cut in order to save money? If you did not do one or the other or both, do you regret it now?

Just started planning not to long ago and I find myself debating over these a little. My mom is not a huge fan of save the dates (she's not familiar with this since it's a newer tradition) so I've been questioning if it would be worth it. Thank you in advance for your input ladies.

Re: Engagement Photos/Save the Dates

  • I'm not sending out STD's because the wedding isn't going to be gigantic or a destination wedding.  I figured that I can let everyone know the date through word of mouth.  I also didn't have an engagement photo session because I would prefer to save the money to spend on the wedding.  It would be nice, but I am currently a student and, obviously, planning for my wedding so there's not a lot of spare cash.

  • I still haven't gotten around to taking our epics and we have married almost 3 months :-p (they came free with our package) I definitely would not have paid extra for them.
But I did send STDs. I think they are good if you are picking a popular date, destination wedding, or having a wedding that a lot of guests will need to fly in for.
I sent STD postcards that I ordered on VistaPrint. They were inexpensive and postcard postage is cheaper than regular mail.
    GL!

  • We did an engagement session because it was included in the photo package from our photographer. I liked doing it because we were able to get to know her and get comfortable with her style. I'm not a huge fan of getting my picture taken, so I viewed it as "practice" for the wedding. Also, I used it to try out my makeup look since I did it myself.

We emailed our guests to tell them to save the date since most of them were coming from out of town and needed to make travel arrangements.

I think that both are totally optional and are great places to save money if you're on a budget.
  • We did STDs, but only because they were in the budget and we found some cute ones.  We did not do engagement photos though (our STDs were a generic image) and we have absolutely no regrets.
  • We did engagement pics because they were free with the package we got. Our photographer also made our guestbook out of our engagement pics (which was also free). We didn't do Save the Dates....I find them kind of pointless - people usually find out your wedding date through word of mouth.

I definitely like that we got engagement pics done - we weren't going to but then we found out they're free - I think I would have regretted it if we hadn't done them :)

  • Thank you so much everyone!!! Really great responses and they have definitely helped!
