US Territories VS Mexico- Help!

I just got engaged and we have decided on a destination wedding, we love the beach! However, some of our immediate family who we really want there are hinting at the idea of traveling to a US Territory (Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands) so they wont have to get passports. My hesitation here is no resorts (that I have found-yet) are all inclusive and the meals, drinks etc add up fast. Anyone have suggestions on resorts that are great to work with for weddings, and have meal plans that are reasonable?!

Or, should I just explain that Mexico is a cheaper option all around even with purchasing a passport?!

Thank you! :)

  • I am having mine at a Beaches resort in Turks and Caicos. It is gorgeous there!! Beaches is an all inclusive resort. It allows children which is good because we have many nieces and nephews. They also offer group rates for the rooms. They also offer wedding packages and give you good deals considering the number of people you will have. You can go online and plan your wedding with everything using their sight. They are part of the Sandals (which are also very nice but adults only)

We looked at Mexico but the problem was the marriage license did not transfer to the US. it was only valid in Mexico.

I know some people who wed in Mexico and it was my understanding that the temporary license in Spanish did not but the translated & notarized document you received later does transfer to the US.

Personally I'd be more put off by the blood tests than the extra paperwork.

  • We are getting married at an all-inclusive resort in Riviera Maya Mexico. It's just south of Cancun with many, many all-inclusive resorts, some of which specialize in weddings. We chose the area because we've been there several times for vacation. Just Google Destination Weddings and you will lots of hotels and travel agencies to choose from.
  • Honestly they would probably save more with an all inclusive and buying their passport that will last 10 years than going somewhere to have to pay for food and drinks. You can find a reasonably nice all inclusive in Mexico for around 1100-1200 of you want to go cheap! I say its worth the passport beinh as it does last a good amount of time.
