Vent time lol

Wife and I just got an invite; it's a local wedding.  Wedding is at 2pm on a Friday, in the middle of the downtown city center, on a weekend when there's a convention in town.  Parking in downtown completely sucks; most likely just getting a spot will require parking in a $25/day garage (since it will be more than four hours) and walking five or six blocks to get to the church; assuming there is parking at all given the convention.  Gets better.  Cocktail hour is at 5:30pm, 3.5 hours later.  Attire is 'black tie optional'.  The cocktail hour and reception are at a venue about six or seven blocks away.  I doubt the ceremony will be more than 30 minutes, so apparently the idea is walk from ceremony to reception and stand there for three hours until cocktail hour starts since there won't be enough time to go back home, or to a hotel.  I'm just glad I'm local because if you're traveling you probably end up having to take two days off from work, and the hotel rates are going to be obnoxious that weekend.  Really don't understand people...

  • dam that sucks.  the time gap is flippin rude and maybe didn't know bout convention.  (crosses fingers) but will be really rude if did.  sorry dealing with this though
  • I hate that to had about an hour and a half in downtown deleware. I would have rather been in Vegas. At least you can watch the people there. In deleware they watch you. I have an hour between. I figure most will just watch us get pics taken or grab a drink from the bar and chat. I hope thats not too bad

Exactly; same issue here.  Downtown here has two food/bar/club areas and neither are anywhere near where the ceremony or reception will be, and with the parking issue there's no way to drive to them, so you could walk the opposite direction from the reception about 15 blocks if you wanted to hang out at a bar, and then 20 blocks back to the reception, call a cab and wait for it (we don't have them flying by all the time like NYC) or twiddle your thumbs lol.  My wife wouldn't have even been able to go due to it being on a Friday but she'll be on maternity leave so that at least solved that problem.

  • "Black Tie Optional" is irritating. If an affair is truly black tie, it's generally noted. "Black Tie Optional" means some people will show up dressed to the nines, expecting top shelf alcohol, passed hors d'ouevres, etc, and some people will show up in khakis or jeans (not that there's anything wrong with that).
  • Yeah, black tie optional is like mullet optional.

  • Mullets arent allowed at weddings? Thanks you just cut my guest list in half. What about Mohawks? Such a money saver this thread turned out to be j/k
  • Here in the south I see a mullet and a mohawk pretty much daily lol

  • Yuck!  Gaps like that are super rude.  I've not been invited to one with a gap (besides cocktail hour itself which is fine), but I'd be tempted to only go to the reception, especially if I had to take off work just to sit around during a gap.

And black tie optional makes me cringe.  An event is black tie or it's not, don't make me guess how fancy something is.
  • lol yeah, I haven't been to too many actual black tie events at 2pm on a Friday.  I am not exactly excited to walk a bunch and stand around in 85 degree heat and humidity in my tux for two hours or more either.

  • @vegasgroom Just wear a tuxedo shirt!  Hahaha!
  • lol that would be awesome.  I might wear one under my shirt so I can bust it out later in the evening.
