June Honeymoon Location Help

So my wedding is May 31, 2014 so we plan on leaving for our honeymoon the next day or two (either June 1 or June 2 depending on where we go).  We originally were going to splurge a little and go to Bora Bora but we found out the start of high season in June 1. Just our luck!  So I don't think $7,000 is enough for the trip.  Therefore, I'm looking for other ideas.  Our realistic budget is $5,000, we only budgeted more for Bora Bora because we know its pricey.  We would ideally like beautiful beaches, specifically really clear calm waters great for snorkeling. Also a place with good fishing since my fiance loves to fish. All inclusive is a plus.  If we could find a place that had a cool room like an overwater bungalow, beachfront villa or honeymoon suite with hot tub that would also be a plus.

So far I have thought of Excellence Punta Cana (but I hear it is on the rough side of the ocean), possibly Hawaii but I'm not sure if our budget it big enough, maybe Turks & Caicos but I know nothing about it.

Any ideas?  We would have about 6 nights to go somewhere.

Re: June Honeymoon Location Help

  • I spent ~$6K for 5 nights in Aitutaki in the Cook Islands. The Aitutaki Lagoon Resort has OWBs and the island is AMAZING!!! It's known for bone fishing and for pristine white beaches. While we went in April, the flights were a bit more expensive than normal because I wanted to fly in a certain class to get frequent flier miles. I highly recommend checking out the Cooks- it's a fantastic alternative in French Polynesia.

FWIW- You *might* be able to get 5 nights at the InterContinental Le Moana in Bora Bora in their garden bungalows for around $7K. When I looked into it, they are running a special that is stay 7/pay 5. If you do that and only that, it might come in close to budget. OWBs will be way over budget, as will island hopping. I've been to the islands many times and each trip was at least $10K because of the islands and resorts I chose.

  • If we went to Bora Bora we would definitely want to stay in an overwater bungalow for at least a couple of nights.  We wouldn't really care to island hop as long as there were enough activities in one place.

I will check out the Cook Islands though!

FWIW, Bora Bora and the other surrounding islands are AMAZING and IMHO worth seeing even if it can't be in an OWB. A lot of people cross it off of their list because they refuse to go unless they stay in the OWB, but IMHO again, some of the garden and beach bungalows are just as amazing and I feel its short sighted to skip some place because of a hotel room. One of my favorite stays was in a beach bungalow in Taha'a. The scenery and nature are what make the destination, not the room. Again, just my honest look at things.

  • Have you looked at all into Central America?  Costa Rica or Belize?  Belize is known for having very good scuba diving/snorkeling because it is situated on a very large reef (i believe the only reef larger is the Great Barrier Reef off Australia).  I know there are all-inclusives in Costa Rica at least that should be within budget - the flights could be pricey depending on where you're coming from, but i think $5k is doable.

Depending on where you're coming from you could potentially do Hawaii for a week for $5k - but there aren't all-inclusives there.

We're wedding date twins!  I am also getting married 5/31/14!  We're waiting until 6/6 to leave for the honeymoon.
  • Check out Belize for sure.

Quintana Roo region of Mexico would cover everything you'd like as well.  Secrets Maroma Beach is definitely worth checking out.  Absolutely beautiful beach, fantastic suites, all inclusive.  Tons of snorkeling in the region (Xel-Ha etc.) and easily would fit into your 5k budget.
  • What about Greece?  I spent almost two weeks on Samos a few years ago and the beaches were amazing and clear (I don't know about snorkeling though).  June should still be cheaper in Greece-it's not yet busy season.  Doryssa is probably the nicest resort on the island: http://www.doryssa.gr/en/home-page (disclaimer: I haven't stayed there since my friend has a house, but we did go to their beach multiple times).  There is great fishing, and I'm sure your H could get on a charter to do some fishing.  Samos isn't a party island-I find it very romantic and relaxed.
  • Jells do you think we could do part of the trip in a beach bungalow and one or two nights in an OWB? We have been to Costa Rica but Belize could be a great option. I'd love to go to Greece but I would feel obligated to sightsee and we really would rather relax after the wedding. Thanks for the great suggestions!
  • My H and I are looking at heading to Bonaire around that time. It's their low season, and we can do it for around 4-5000 from Boston. We both SCUBA dive, which is included in that amount, so you could probably even do it for less. The island looks amazing, and it's more off the beaten path than some others in the Carribean.
  • Congrats on your wedding- we are wedding date twins! My fiancee and I are also getting married 5.31 and are leaving June 2nd for our honeymoon. We actually went with Excellence Punta Cana (after I spent months reading trip advisor reviews and comparing the resort to others like it- Dream, Secrets, Couples Only). I really like the idea of an all inclusive, especially not having to plan a honeymoon on top of planning a wedding. We're super excited about it, and definitely within our 4-5K price range.

Not sure how I missed this! It *might* be possible, depending on the length of stay and what resorts you want. Airfare is killer- it will be around $1700pp from LAX to Bora Bora. Then, whatever it costs to get to LAX. Moorea is a little bit better because you can take a ferry over and the resorts aren't quite as pricey. I'd also say if you are including activities and food in your budget, it will be even more difficult to make it work.

  • Christie - Excellence PC was the exact resort I am considering if we decide to go there!
  • We have reservations at Excellence PC but I am considering switching to Secrets if I can get the special rate when it opens up in a few weeks.  I would be able to save about $500 plus the less expensive airport transportation.

  • So we are getting married on 05.31.2014 and going on our honeymoon June 2nd as well. Our budget is 5k also and I've been searching every site and reading every review about AI. I think we narrowed it down to Costa Rica or St. Lucia. I keep going back and forth, and still looking at other destinations as well. It's so hard to pick just one. Don't want to make the wrong choice!

I don't think there is a "wrong" choice as long as you have a list of must-have options and stick to them.

We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to book the PERFECT honeymoon, but lets be real, it is just another vacation (sometimes more expensive).

Agree with this.  We're using the honeymoon as an excuse to take a trip that is a bit longer and more expensive than a normal trip would be, and to someplace we'll probably never be able to go again...but i'm sure we wouldn't be disappointed no matter what we chose to do.
  • I'm getting married on 5/31/14 as well! We are going to Secrets Maroma Beach for our honeymoon. We leave the next day on 6/1/13 and will be there for six days in a swim-out suite with a jacuzzi. It's an all-inclusive and has great reviews! We spent around $4,000.
  • We're staying at Excellence Punta Cana in July!  We booked the ocean front terrace suite for 10 days...it looks awesome!

That is where we are going in January!!!!

  • If you're considering staying in the East Coast for your honeymoon, come to Massachusetts. You can come relax on the beach on Cape Cod or Nantucket with plenty of activities to do and great restaurants to enjoy your romantic getaway. • We booked Moorea & Bora Bora for our honeymoon! So excited!
