GRRR shut down...

Sigh. Just found out I can either keep coming to work and clocking in and out and PRAY they back pay me (which they should since they passed a law stating so) or go home and hang with the dogs, but not get paid until after the shut down is over.. UGH what to do what to do. A little back story: I work for a school district for a federal fitness grant they received. Because the money is federal, we can't purchase or do anything until the shut down is over. That being said, I can still come to work and twiddle my thumbs and watch TV online. The only difference between being home and being at work is that I could be with my doggies and not being paid. That said, I think I'll keep coming to work in hopes that the law they just made includes me to get back paid. This is insane... thanks for affecting my paycheck to pay MY bills... so uh.. who pays my bills when I can't??? I guess my wedding fund will have to cover it if need be until the shut down is over. My poor savings account just can't get a break since I just spent over a 1,000 of it to fix my car. Grrrrrrrrrr this money thing is frickin' insane. Thank you government for not having your life together enough that you have to make the people suffer. Oh, and Obama, You're not winning. In fact, I'm pretty certain no one will be voting a democrat into office next term because of you pulling a stunt like this... THANKS!!! Please throw your shut down rants in here :)

Re: GRRR shut down...

  • I am fearing that I soon will be affected as well by this damn shutdown.  I work for a government contractor and received an email this morning that all in-direct employees should work no more then 24 hours and then use their comp leave for the rest.  If they don't have enough comp leave then they can request to go into a negative balance by their managers.  And for any direct employees who work less then 70% of their time to direct tasks (meaning they charge more then 12 hours a week to overhead) are to start using comp leave instead of charging to overhead.  I just took a quick glance at my timesheet and I wonderfully fall into the second category.  Now I am just waiting to hear back from my manager about what I need to do.  It is kind of hard to work on direct tasks when your customers (government) is shutdown.

Oh and what makes this even better is I only have 30 hours of comp leave so I will most likely be going into a negative balance unless the government can come to some sort of an agreement soon.  If they can't, guess I won't be taking any time off for anything (even sickness) for a long fucking time.

OMG! That's insane!!! I can't believe they want you to use your comp time. That alone would have my claws out. All of my sick days and leave are going towards my wedding and honeymoon so I can't take any days off regardless. This is soo stupid. I seriously wish it wasn't a "well I want this, but you won't give me it soooo I'll just make Americans pay by not paying them"

  • AMEN SISTER.

FI is furloughed as well. He's a seasonal ranger for the National Parks Service, which has gotten nothing but hammered because of the shut down which makes zero sense. What did the park rangers do that caused the shut down? NOTHING. Honestly, if the parks were allowed to be open, most people would work without pay for the time being (provided they will get back paid). At this point, it isn't worth it for FI to go back to work even if the shut down ends tomorrow, because we're leaving Wednesday to go to Ohio then Michigan for the wedding. We are hoping that he will be able to go right back to work after our honeymoon, but who knows at this point?

And all of this over this damn health care shit that the public doesn't even want anymore that has done nothing but raise insurance costs when we were promised that it wouldn't. My parents pay for their own insurance and after Obamacare was passed, their premiums went up more than $200 a month! Affordable Care my ass. I would gladly pay for my BC if it meant hard working business owners like my parents could actually afford to have insurance at all.

At least he can relax at the wedding and honeymoon with no worries. Most likely it will be done by then thank god. I hear you about Obamacare. My one friend needs it because she's part time.. yet when she checked the options it would be over $200 a month for her to have it.... Yet her monthly paycheck is like $600-$800... insane!

Tell me about it.  It is the one thing I really hate about my company.  One day our fire alarms went off and we had to evacuate the building.  We were outside for about 45 minutes.  After it was all clear we returned to the building only to get an email saying that we either had to use leave or make up the time.  Um, hello, it was not my damn fault the fire alarm went off!  Needless to say I made up the time but was pissed about it.

Same thing happened when our state issued a state of emergency because of a snow storm. The governor on the news plus the news people kept saying "Do not go out on the roads unless it is an emergency."  But my lovely company basically was like 'well if you don't come in you need to use comp leave."  Um, the damn governor is telling me to stay off the roads because it is dangerous.  I mean I understand that businesses need to make money and shit like this and the shutdown could really affect their bottom line, but damn it still sucks.

DANG!!!!! That's insane literally insane. I'd have to be job hunting.. though government jobs pay really well which is the only reason I still work for who I do. It's soooo boring, but pay is nice.

  • I live in an area where the primary job is either working for the government or working for a government contractor.  It is really hard to find anything else that pays as well as they do and I have definitely looked.

I just think if our company is not wanting us to work so much then they should just furlough some of their employees.  Yes, it would suck not getting paid until all this is over with but it is much better to have to wait to get back pay then it is to use up all your leave plus however much else as a way to charge for your in-direct hours. Every two weeks I get 5.25 hours worth of leave so it takes me forever to get my comp time built up.  And then to think we are coming into the cold months where getting sick is bound to happen, it is just not good to use up all your leave.

    Ugh, this sucks ass!

Agreed. I wouldn't want to be in your shoes. Is unpaid an option? I get paid once a month, so I make 8 hrs of sick leave and 9.25 of vacation leave.

Well our first option is to take any deferred or floating holidays, then we have to use our comp leave.  The only time when voluntary unpaid leave is allowed is if you have no comp leave balance to begin with.  So yeah, my company sucks butt.

  • I feel you all on the govt shut down.  We started building a house back in May and FINALLY had everything ready to go and sent all the loan information off about 3-4 weeks ago and now that the govt shut down we can't close on our house, much less know anything about what is going on with our loan.  So now our house just sits there.  I wouldn't be so upset about it if I haven't been living out of a suitcase since May when I moved back to my hometown.  I am beyond ready for this to be over with...

  • I've been sitting around for a week now - not working. Yep, I feel you. And I can't even take leave to go hang out with FI. If the government magically reopens, I have to report the next day.

  • OP--What does having the student loans furloughed mean? I'm currently paying back loans so I'm wondering if I'm affected by this.

Student loans wont be furloughed (furlough means leave of absence - it's not like your loans suddenly aren't showing up to work)...you still have to pay those. Not to mention your loans are likely managed by a private company.

ETA: You still have to pay taxes too.

ETA: Unless she means her loans aren't being disbursed?

Duh, me. I was thinking that they were pausing loan payments but that wouldn't make any sense at all :)~

  • I'm still trying to figure out how the people that got us into this mess by not doing the 1 thing they're hired to do are "essential" and still being paid...

Also the closure of the government websites (that run themselves btw) but leaving up the first lady's "you're all fat and can't take care of yourselves" website...
  • FI's parents own a small business and will save about 10k thanks to the ACA. Some states have been better at implementing it then others.

The shutdown sucks though, congress should not getting paid for this shit.

  • My dad went back to work today---but he's not getting paid. It really stinks. I'm so thankful that we are not planning a big wedding. But my dad is the bread winner in our family and it's stupid for him to be working and not getting paid. And there was a lot of confusion at the office he was telling us.

I am so thankful my fiance did not want a government job.

As for health insurance--I have not looked yet. I am currently temping and can barely afford my regular bills. I'm just praying I stay healthy until our wedding when I can finally get insurance again.

The bolded is illegal. He has to get paid if he works for the federal government. It may not come on time, but once the government reopens, they have to pay him.

  • I'm sorry the gov't failed you guys.

@alisonmarie658, I love the park rangers! (I love the mountains in New England and the people that takes care of them) How can people blame the rangers???

    Shut down rants? NWR.

This is stupid. Congress is getting paid.  The President is getting paid.
I work for a non-profit and volunteer for a non-profit. I can't believe they can get paid..while the people has to suffer. People who are non-essential just don't have a job.  And people who are essential, just gets to work and wait to be paid???  They have bills to pay and kids to feed!

Meanwhile, sick people are trying to get into federally funded hospitals and are turned away.  So, you want to apply to a federally funded program because you're sick or too old, sorry the office is closed...you need what? office is closed. Many non-profits are waiting to see what happens because their budget to help people (one of mine started a new fiscal year 10/1) is affected by gov't funding or gov't agencies.  Fortunately, we have enough to get by, but we're watching this very closely and trying to make sure our clients are ok.  (Mostly low-income families and seniors.)

Urgh, why do we vote these people into place?

My bad, my loans are messed up in general. They were on forbearance because some employee of myfedloans didn't correct their error and instead forbearanced me. yet all I wanted was my payment applied correctly. Needless to say, they're still working since they answered the phone.

  • If I were furloughed right now I'd be spending my time calling House Representatives and telling them that as a constituent, you want government back open. If only 1% of the 800,000 people at home did this, they would be overwhelmed by the calls.

I really hope this all comes to an end soon, for your sake- and all the others impacted by this childish behavior of our "representatives."

  • Enough house members are on record saying they want to vote and end the shutdown but Boehner will not let that vote go ahead. The budget should have only been voted on as a budget, not turned into a gimmick for voting the thousandth time to overturn the ACA. You can do that anytime without screwing with people's livelihoods.

  • @ Maggie- sounds like we work at the same company. LOL I know so many people using their vacation and comp time right now because they are furloughed.

Our company just opened up their annual enrollment for benefits today. I'm pretty psyched that most costs went up ~$10/week. It was already kindf of pricey and I only cover myself. If I covered my DH and SD, it would have been A LOT worse.

The whole thing, no matter what your beliefs are, is SO frustrating.
