Pet costumes for Halloween, yea or nay?

My BF and I were walking around Party City this morning and we happened to walk by the pet costume section. I immediately went "DAWWWWW!" and went over there to check them out. My poor BF just groaned and promptly dragged me out of the section.

I then informed him that once we get a dog someday, I wanted to put a costume on her/him. BF said, "No way, we are not putting a costume on our future dog. Every dog I've seen with a costume just looks miserable!"

I then tried to convince him that not every dog was miserable. But he didn't believe me. Sigh.

Lol so I am curious, ladies. Do you put your pet in a Halloween costume or no? And if you do, please post pictures if you have some :)

Re: Pet costumes for Halloween, yea or nay?

  • Yea. I'm an evil cat owner, but I haven't decided what Ellie's going to be for Halloween yet. I have 25 days, right?
  • I grew up with an amazing dog, and while she would tolerate dress-up every so often, she hated it. We tried an official dog costume once, and she was just so unhappy.

Now I have a parakeet, so no costume for him (flight suits are expensive and are not actually costumes. Also, he's a crafty little sucker and we'd never be able to get the damn thing on or off him).

  • I agree with your BF. I've never seen a dog that looks happy to be dressed up in a silly costume. My best friend used to try to dress up her pug but he'd figure a way out of the damn thing as fast as he cute. Now the most she does is put a hat or something small on him long enough to take a picture and then he's free.

I never have and never will dress up one of my own pets in a costume.

  • I'm a negative on the pet costumes. I agree with your BF that every single dog I've seen in costume looked humiliated.
  • I totally caved and got my dog a pet costume. Target had them for $7 or $8 and I just couldn't pass it up. I ended up buying a "cheerleading" costume for Cinders. It's basically a harness type stretchy fabric tube that covers her chest and back and half a skirt that drapes over her lower back. Once I had it on her and she checked herself out she pretty much ignored it and resumed harassing my parent's dogs. Plus I think she likes it when I start cooing over her and telling her how pretty she is. I'll post a pic later but the costume didn't honestly seem to bother her after she had had it on for more than a minute. I think it helps that there isn't any headgear or extra volume or annoying parts sticking out of it to distract her.

  • Okay, I'm starting to look like a cruel cat owner, which I am not (I am evil, but not cruel). Costumes are worn for less than half an hour - basically long enough to get a good photo and then she's free.
  • @KeptInStitches You aren't a cruel cat owner. :) One time I got a costume for my ex-BF's cat. It was a hotdog costume. Really we put it on him just for laughs...the poor guy was so uncomfortable that we had it on for maybe 5 or 10 minutes. We put it on him and he dropped to the floor (kind of like when you stick tape on their backs) and proceeded to slink until he made it under the couch. Thankfully he was a pretty mellow and easy-going cat so we were able to get him out from under the couch and out his costume pretty quickly. Call me cruel for laughing...but he honestly did look really silly.

  • @lmhollister That is ... I LOVE THAT!
  • I don't dress our dog up but no costumes really fit him anyway...he's too big for anything but a cape.  :)
  • I couldn't do that to my pets.  On the other hand, it'd bring me a stupid amount of petty revenge satisfaction to put them in a costume.  I might be able to get the dog in one, but I'd be mutilated if I tried that with the cat.

What? I call her my princess all the time. Plus it'll make an awesome Christmas card.
  • I think it's just a matter of knowing your pet. Some are okay with it, and some aren't. If yours is okay with it, go for it. They are pretty darn cute.

@motolyn, do you have a pic of Maus the Wonderdog handy? She seems to do well with costumes...and tutus.

Ask and ye shall receive.  Maus doesn't mind costumes she's actually fine with them.   This year we have Maus (Weim) and Brutus (English Mastiff) so we're trying to figure out what couples costume we can do with them.

Edit to add: Maus loves the attention she gets from the costumes, when we go for walks in the open air markets people ask us if they can take pictures.  Maus is an AW.
  • I totally forgot about her hotdog costume! I miss you, Mausy!
  • @motolyn, your pup is adorable! The wonder woman costume made me so happy. My childhood dog wouldn't go outside in the winter unless he had his parka and boots on, so he didn't mind having a costume. That being said, it really depends on the animal, and how willing they are to have a costume on. Capes do really well on dogs because it goes around their neck and its easy to take off if the dog gets upset.
  • When I get a dog I will put a costume on them at least once to see if they are ok with it. I love how cute they are! Hopefully I will get a puppy and work them up to liking them. But we will see. Especially when I am old enough to decide to have kids, then I can work them into the kids costumes so they go together.
  • @motoLyn - I will admit your dog looks pretty cute and happy in her tutu :)

  • I think we lucked out with Maus or that we just trained her at an early age.  Put her in something and praise her and gave her treats.  We started to have our mastiff puppy wear bow ties and he couldn't care less.  Though he's super happy to get some praise and treats for wearing the bow tie.

    @leia1979 Mausy misses you too.
  • I'm loving the bowtie. @motoLyn Your dogs are flipping adorable.

I concur with the BF... I don't think pets like clothes, in general, lol. But I think if you like it, do what you want! It's your pet!
