Suggestions for chapped lips?

I've been having an issue recently with my lips being super chapped...I've been trying a variety of chapsticks and lip balms but for the most part they all get to the point where if I'm not applying them constantly my lips will dry up and chap again :( Does anyone have any suggestions on something I can use to heal my lips and not get "addicted" to? I've tried just cutting out all chapsticks and lip balms but eventually the pain gets to be too much! I need something that will heal my skin, not just coat it for a while :)

  • I can't help you wean off.  I'm addicted to Lip Smackers.  I have one in every room in my house, in every bag, at work, etc.  My lips are constantly dry and I can't live without chap stick.  When they get chapped for me, I try to "brush" gently the dead skin off my lips with a toothbrush.  That helps me get rid of the flakes.

Mix olive oil in some sugar to make an oily paste. Then brush in circles with a tooth brush on lips. Then rinse put in vaseline before bed. Do it once a week.
  • Make sure you're drinking plenty of water.  I can always tell when I'm getting dehydrated when my lips get chapped.

You definitely need to wean yourself off of the chapstick.  Chapstick used too often causes exactly the problem you're having.  You're lips have become reliant on the chapstick instead of maintaining themselves.  GypsyWife's suggestion is a good way to help keep your lips from getting too bad while you're going through the process. Also, just rubbing some olive oil lightly on your lips every once in awhile instead of chapstick will help get you off the chapstick.  I would say the best thing you can do though is just drink lots and lots of water.
  • Try weaning yourself off the scented ones. I used lip smackers constantly. I ended up being allergic and with lips bigger than lisa rinna just after starting college! I switched to vaseline only. but now I use aquafor. its vaseline with some extra goodness. Even my H uses it when his lips get chapped in the winter.
  • Run a humidifier in your bedroom, while you're sleeping. I run one 24 hours a day, once the heat goes on in my home. It has saved my skin.

  • I would exfoliate your lips a little with a sugar scrub or washcloth in the shower. Use Vaseline or an unscented lip balm. I like the Mary Kay too( unscented and no color).
  • Vaseline works.  Just put a little on your finger and rub it on your lips.

  • I use "Honey Trap" from Lush. It is amazing! Keeps my lips super soft! They also have really good lips scrubs there too.
  • I would suggest the sugar lip polish from Fresh. They always use natural ingredients to make their products. Its a bit pricey but it exfoliates the lips without causing damage (ie your lips won't bleed if you buff them using the product). I love it, and its definitely cured my chapped lips. Another possible reason for chapped lips could be the result of them getting sunburnt (usually natural chap sticks provide sun protection).  Hope that helps.
  • Aquaphor. It works wonders.
  • I use natural lip balms made by a company called Badger, and I've found that since using them, my lips feel way less chapped and I don't get that dry, burning feeling anymore.

  • This is slightly embarrassing, but I use Balmex. It's the same crap that people use for diaper rash on their babies. It's bright white, so I only wear it at night. But, it works wonderfully! FWIW I do think they have an adult version now.

A&D ointment (also for diaper rash) works wonders. It's clear and goes on like Vaseline, but has a unique smell. I also keep a little pot of Vaseline in my purse, and use it all the time.

  • OP, it sounds simple, but I would try buying a nalgene or cup to carry around with you. Make sure it always has water in it and that you're constantly drinking water (not soda, juices, coffee..). It sounds like you're kind of dehydrated.

As soon as I feel my lips starting to get chapped, I drink a big thing of coconut water. And I use straight up vaseline at night when I'm sleeping to create a moisture barrier.

  • I love using Mary Kay "Satin Lips" set. Your lips feel like new!!! And Burt's Bees lip balm.
    This!

Try to start steering clear of anyh lip products that have camphor, phenol, or menthol in them because they will actually dry your lips out.  Also avoid salicylic acid.

Beeswax in products should be ok.  Shea Butter, Lanolin, and Coconut Oil are your friends :-)

I used to have the worst chapped lips. And I had to go to the doctor to figure out why my lips started massively rejecting all my chapsticks. Then I started using the the Satin Lips set. The mask exfoliates and moisturizes.

  • Thanks all for your input!

Funnily enough, I do drink a ton of water. I have a 24oz sports bottle that I keep filled with water all day (especially while I work, as I take calls all day and am constantly talking.) I go through about 3 or 4 of those a day.

I think you are all correct in saying that I've used it so much my lips aren't producing what they need to moisturize themselves. I have tried Vasoline and Aquaphor at night before bed, and I'm okay for a few hours when I wake up, then they start to hurt again :(

I never thought to try using Lush/Fresh products!! I definitely will have to give that a try.

I also read online about using Lanolin...has anyone ever tried/had success with that?
