Destination Wedding Invitations VS Save the Date??

Hi!

So I am getting married Oct 10, 2014 in Cancun Mexico, I am extremely excited and I know that not all of guest will be able to go but we are having a party back at home after to celebrate. My question is...Should I send out a save the date now or just go ahead and send out invitations and send a reminder closer to the date? I need to know how many people are going 100 days before the wedding so I figured an invitation would work instead of wasting money on the save the dates too. Any ideas or suggestions on how to handle this? I want to give my guest enough heads so that they can save and make travel plans as necessary. Thanks!

Re: Destination Wedding Invitations VS Save the Date??

  • I think there might be two negatives to sending them so early:

    1. People will lose their RSVP cards, and many folks won't know for sure until it's much closer.  I'm pretty darn organized, but I wouldn't trust our household to not misplace the invite and any inserts if I had to keep track of them for a year.

    2. You might not know exact wedding details until it gets closer.  We didn't have the time of the ceremony and dinner and locations confirmed until five or six months before.

I would suggest just sending a save-the-date and set up a website and include that on there and put the dates for the wedding in Mexico and the party back home.  We also needed our RSVPs back early to give the resort an estimate 90 days before, so we sent out the invites five months before and requested the RSVPs at the three-month mark.  That should work for you too.  Good luck! :)

  • I agree with PP. We set up our website first then sent out save the dates 1 year out. The save the dates got our guests really excited about the upcoming wedding and gave everybody heaps of time to plan/save etc. We have now finalised wedding details so we will be sending out our invitations at the end of this month with RSVPs due back at the end of Febuary.

By sending the STDs most guests will know by the time they get the invitation whether they are coming to the wedding.

  • We did an announcement/save the date about 7 months out as my ta said that is usually when the prices level out with travel agent info, date, and our wedding website. Included was a lil piece of paper saying deposit is $ and is due ---.

  • We sent out save the dates at 1 year. Then, we are doing invitations in February for a May wedding. We have a wedding website with our travel agents info and everything, but it doesn't seem anyone has looked at it with the wedding so far away.
