Spanx....

Do you have Spanx? Wear them? What do they do for you?

I went to Dillard's and tried some on and found they didn't do a thing. I tried on both a S and a M and found that I looked no different. I tried the "Trust your Thinstincts" kind. Am I doing something wrong? I posted this also in the hair and beauty forum, but it seems kind of dead over there and I'm looking for some feedback. My wedding dress is trumpet style and I want to look thinner.

Re: Spanx....

  • Spanx don't really make you look thinner, per se, they just kind of smooth out bumps and distribute womanly bits over a more even area. If you're skinny, it might not do much for you.
  • Yeah, they just smooth you out. I like to wear them with super clingy jersey dresses too smooth out my belly pooch a bit, but with the thickness of most wedding dresses I don't see how they'd help much.

I also have the cheap Target off-brand, not actual spanx.

  • If you're typically wearing a size small or medium, you're not really going to see much difference when wearing spanx (or any version of them).  I'm plus size so spanx helps quite a bit.  I look a bit thinner and clothes just fit better because I'm smoothed out.  As it's been said, most wedding dresses are way too thick to have spanx be beneficial.  I did wear the bike short kind with my dress just to prevent thigh chaffing...but I wear those under most dresses I wear for the same reason.
  • Oh ok, I see! Thanks so much for your help! And yes, my dress is very thick material so thanks for the advice ladies!
  • I just bought a new pair of spanx (can't remember the name) to take the place of my 6+ year old pair that are slowly falling apart because I have worn them so much.  The newer spanx suck.  I got a medium which the size chart recommend but they do nothing to hold me in and the waist band and legs roll down and up like crazy!  I am definitely going back to the older pair (the older pairs I believe are sized by A, B, C, D while the new one's are small, medium and large)

As for what I wear them with.  I wear them with my pencil skirts and any thinner, clingy dress material.  I did not wear them with my wedding dress because it just wasn't necessary.  The construction of the dress was great and basically did what spanx do which was to smooth me out.

I'm generally a size 4/6, and I do notice that Spanx help a
little bit. I have the high-waisted boy shorts (I think they're called Skinny Britches). They smooth the little bump over my tummy and make my silhouette much thinner when I'm standing sideways, especially in shift dresses or pencil skirts. They don't change much if I'm facing forward.

I think different Spanx provide different coverage, too. They have those full-on body suits that are apparently wicked effective, but they look like torture devices to me.
  • I wore Spanx for my wedding - I had a satin/lace dress with no extra fabric or shaping. I'm a size 6 and they did basically nothing for me except smooth me out. It was great for the dress I wore, but I would look for another brand if you want to "drop a size" or whatever.

Expanding on the bolded and just asking a question but is something like that even possible?  I mean, to drop a size with say losing weight you have to lose about 10 pounds.  I just cannot imagine what kind of body shaping product is out there that will not only drop you a size but wont result in weird fat lumps elsewhere on your body. Body shapers are meant to shape your body not decrease your size so for all who read this know that wearing a body shaper will not make you skinnier.  Will it smooth things out?  Sure, but you will not drop a full size.  Let's be realistic here.

  • I bought a pair from the store just to have (they weren't spanx, but I cannot remember the name). I usually wear a medium, but when I tried them on it made me look worse. They were so tight under my bum that it gave me major lumps instead of helping me. I ended up buying an XL pair! I just wanted them to smooth my belly and help hold my shape and the bigger pair worked best for me.

  • Either way, it didn't make me look any different. I was very disappointed and I wasn't about to spend $80 on it. I was informed that Target has a knock-off brand though.

Some people use corsets or other shapers to make themselves look a size smaller. I didn't say anything about it not creating lumps. The mass just redistributes itself, but depending on the style of your dress, it can make you look a lot skinnier.
