NER: Need advice on reception food.

We're having daytime reception - cocktail hour starts at 1pm. We originally had planned on doing the buffet because you get a ton more food. We recently found out that the buffet option limits you to 125 people. I have a feeling we're going to be over that. The buffet option is $130 per person.
The next step down is $120 per person. You get much less food. Please tell me if you think this will be enough. Would you end up leaving hungry? Side note: we're doing open bar for the entire event and we're hosting an afterparty at a bar.

Cocktail hour includes various hummus and flatbreads with olives
vegetables and a variety of dips
That's it. No passed hors d'oeuvres.

Appetizer
Soup or salad
We pick only two entrees

Then cookies made by the chef including a wide array of desserts and cakes I'm bringing.

There is a ton more food included in the buffet. Should I just tell FI we need to try to keep it within 125 and hope the venue works with us if we're a few people over?

Re: NER: Need advice on reception food.

  • I think that sounds like plenty of food, except for the cocktail hour. Starting lunch at 2pm is getting late. Could you do cocktail hour at noon? Or make it a half hour? A buffet may have way more options and sides, but it sounds like the plates will give people a full meal too.
  • Unfortunately the venue won't let us change the timing of the events.
  • That sounds good to me. People don't need to stuff themselves.

  • I'm surprised that amount of food is as costly as it is... hope the entrees are really something special!

  • Cocktail hour strikes me as a little sparse, but the rest sounds like enough, especially considering the time of day.  Man, $120/person seems like a lot though.  I'm from an expensive area (NYC), hubby and I had an abundant (probably too much..) spread from cocktails through dessert (including open bar) for $85/person.

I think the venue would definitely work with you if you had a few guests over 125, if you wanted to go with the buffet instead. Good luck with your planning and congrats on your wedding day in advance!

That sounds good... all we're having is:
    chocolate fountain and cookies
    salad
chicken cordon blue or stuffed salmon with crabmeat and green peppers and roasted red poatoes
    cake

They'll be full, no worries :)

    Stuck in the damn box!

It is a lot. I know. FI and I fell in love with the place. I'm in NY too. It's a little upstate at a really well known resort. And thanks!

Oooh, those upstate venues are gorgeous!  Damn you NY and your perfect settings and unaffordable everything else! Lol ;) In all seriousness though, I think you could get away with the buffet if you have a few over 125.  Whatever you do, it'll be great.  Enjoy!
  • Right!? I had never been to this place before and when FI took me there, he was like, you're going to want to have it here - you'll know the second you step out of the car. And he was totally right.
    Thanks!
  • As long as you are serving lunch it will be plenty of food.  People don't need to get 2nds and 3rds.

  • The meal portion is standard in my experience but cocktail hour is really sparse. Since you are having a private ceremony, could you skip cocktail hour and put that money towards something else? I'd be fine showing up to a reception and just having the meal start.

  • Unfortunately they won't let us not do a cocktail hour. Also the cocktail hour isn't a separate fee. It's included in all the packages.
