Not Engaged Yet

Wednesday

I know I do not have anything to complain about but oh well.

I woke up late and almost didn't have time to get ready for work.

I had a really long day. This new schedule is kicking my ass and ruining weekend plans.

I got home finally, and my BF clogged the toilet and didn't do anything about it. I went to take care of it and the handle got stuck on and overflowed! FML

So now I am on my 4th mikes (please don't judge me. I am a light weight.) And I am feeling pretty good!

How is your Wednesday?  How do you like your pasta?

I like mine with a nice red sauce.

Re: Wednesday

  • My Wednesday was spent trying to spend my time thinking about other things beside my family and the fact that my BF has been teasing me relentlessly with the fact that he has been looking at engagement rings.

As for pasta, I love chicken Alfredo! Or, if you saute everything with a bunch of vegetables and some chicken or beef. I am actually a huge pasta fan though, so anything tastes good :-)
  • My Wednesday was a fucking bitch. My students are really trying my patients this semester (all of my co-workers are just as frustrated as I am too!).

I teach public speaking and I have the students sign up for their speech days themselves and they get a schedule on day ONE of the semester telling them when we are doing speeches, tests, everything. But still after they pick their day to give their speech I get a million e-mails saying they are sick, not prepared (yes some students' excuse is that they just didn't bother to do it), someone died, blah blah blah. It's so frustrating and one of my co-workers just texted me saying she has caught one of her students cheating and that's always a bitch to deal with.

Pasta sounds awesome right now. I'm trying really hard to lose weight though so I haven't had any in awhile :( Spaghetti is my favorite! I always have it with ground hot Italian sausage in the sauce and it's amazing! I'll pretty much eat any type of pasta though I love it all!

BF really prefers a white sauce to a red sauce so we try to alternate between the two when I'm cheating on my diet a little and having pasta.

  • Omg! When I read the accountability threads and other general food posts I feel so inadequate! I love cooking, baking and trying new flavors together. But some of the stuff I read just so so foreign to me and I have no idea what you ladies are talking about. I need to broaden my food horizons.

Is it strange that I only tried Chicken Alfredo a year ago? I love it though! That is the only white sauce I have really ever had that I can think of. ( But like I said it's a mikes kind of night.)

@psychbabe314 How long have you and your BF been together?

@bethsmiles I am assuming you teach a college class? I have to admit in high school I straight up told the teacher I didn't have anything. I suck at preparing and researching even if I am passionate about the topic. I once did a speech/report on human trafficking and sex slaves but ended up repeating facts and numbers and reiterating everything about 10 times. I am rambling. I apologize.
  • Yup I teach at the university I'm getting my masters at. I LOVED my class last semester but this new group of freshmen really need to get their shit together. The class I teach is very rubric based (which I actually hate but I can't do anything about that) they literally just need to use the rubric as checklist and do the damn assignments and they would probably get a B.

Although their test scores did improve from the last exam so I'm happy about that.

  • It seems that the younger the class the more and more they don't care. This is coming from one of the young people! I was looking at a page on facebook that has a lot of stuff from my childhood that I forgot about haha. I miss a lot of the simpler things. I am rambling again.

I hope things go better for you tomorrow @bethsmiles.
  • @bethsmiles we had people cheat on the exam!! Two friends sat next to each other and had such similar answers that the professor, who doesn't speak English very well, noticed and asked me to talk to them. I got the, "Oh, it was because we studied together! Next time, we won't sit next to each other so you'll know we didn't cheat." I wonder how similar their tests will be next time ...

And my voice is hoarse from having to explain to students over and over the answers to the test. I have a student who I think may be on the spectrum. He's a nice kid, but he can get very belligerent when he's asking questions, and easily/visibly frustrated when he doesn't understand the answers he gets. I hate to leave him so frustrated, but he definitely needs to come after class with questions instead of just asking them during class--it'll take more time to explain the answers sufficiently, and it's awkward doing it with the WHOLE class waiting to move on.

@Aschive UGH when my partner doesn't unclog the toilet, I sometimes want to kill him. (TMI) I have inflammatory bowel disease, and when I was flaring for 18 months, I still managed to not clog the toilet as much as he does! (end TMI)

I like my pasta with white sauces, but it's easier/healthier to make my own tomato sauce, so I usually do that.

  • Luckily I'm done for the week! Which is good for my students (because the urge to murder them will probably fade by Monday) and good for me because I can try to find a happy place.

  • @phira I don't feel it is TMI. I have not clogged the toilet since we moved in. I swear I am plunging that thing at least once a day after he goes in there! I don't understand how that happens.

@bethsmiles Hopefully it goes away by Monday, but I bet it will be there again by the end of the week.

I made small shell noodles with Barilla basil and tomato or garlic organic sauce. I am not sure which one it is. But it was delicious.

@phira - I really dread the day I catch a student cheating. We make all our students submit their speeches to a program that runs it against websites and other papers that have been submitted. Our students know that's what it does and still cheat.

I haven't had any students who I thought might be on the spectrum but I had a friend in high school who was pretty much exactly what you are describing and he was on the spectrum.

We did have a student last semester who needed just ridiculous amounts of help with the class. She asked questions all the time in class, went to multiple TAs office hours every week, and still bombarded her TA with e-mails (like 5 or 6 a DAY!). Maybe I'm just insensitive but if you need that much help with a fairly simple 100 level class you might not be ready for college.

On a completely unrelated topic - I've never made my own sauce before, is it easy?

@Aschive, our two year anniversary will be March 3rd, so ~1.5 years. Also, never tried chicken Alfredo before? Wow! My BF's mom is southern and she makes some of the most delicious food! I've never liked coleslaw until she bought it and told me to put some on some bbq sandwiches she made. DELICIOUS! Still don't like it by itself though! I recently tried elk for the first time too.

@bethsmiles, I think that some sauces are fairly simple to make (like a splash of olive oil with some seasonings). But alfredo was a bit complicated mainly because I do not have the patience to stand in front of the stove and constantly stir it so that the milk would not burn. Also, my mom use to work at a community college teaching nursing. She finally left, one of the reasons being cheating. She caught several students cheating and the school refused to take disciplinary action against them. My college will fail you immediately and put you on probation if they catch you.

Edited: weird bolding in places... nm, still doing it

  • @bethsmiles I absolutely agree--if you need THIS much help with a 100-level course, there's a problem. I do have some students who probably should have taken the non-honors version of our course, but it's too late to switch.

Making sauce is pretty easy, although I have no idea how to make it better or anything. I buy crushed tomatoes in a can and heat it on the stove. I sometimes add half a yellow onion (while it's on the stove, and then I remove the onion), or I'll saute garlic first. Then I add a little butter (optional), salt, pepper, and basil. Last night's turned out pretty good with garlic + butter instead of onion + butter.

All this talk about clogging the toilet just confirms to me that I made the right choice when I was adamant that BF and I choose an apartment with two bathrooms. BF has had some pretty epic bathroom sessions, and I'd rather not share a toilet with his #2s, if at all possible. I honestly have no idea how I'd react if I had to unclog a toilet after he'd clogged it... but it wouldn't be good.
All this clogging the toilet talk makes me thrilled that BF doesn't have this problem. It's never occurred to me that I wouldn't want to share a bathroom with him.

As for Wednesday, eh nothing special.

@Bethsmiles @Phira: I proctored a midterm exam last year (intro to psych). As I circulated around the room to make sure students weren't cheating I caught a student flipping through the lecture slides! ALL OF THE LECTURES USING ONE PAGE/SLIDE! I don't condone cheating, but REALLY?! If you are going to cheat,
at least make an effort to hide it. I brought this to the attention of the professor and the student was expelled as a result. The story spread like wild fire and my classmates even made me a NARC cape (along with a silly little card saying: next time you proctor wear this, no one will try to pull that shit again). Its never been worn, but I still have it.

  • @bride2b71614 - Wow that is a super lame attempt at cheating. He must have had a history of it if he was expelled though.

  • @phira I just made an arriabiata sauce last night with whole wheat pasta and shrimp - it was AWESOME (although definitely not spicy enough for my taste).  Let me know if you want the recipe - super duper simple (garlic, red pepper, tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, herbs, salt, pepper).  Yummmmm.

  • @KateJ16 Hells yeah! That sounds delicious, and it'll give us something new to try!

@bride2b71614 WOW. That is pretty brazen. We had a student who did something similarly stupid on this exam (obviously we didn't notice the two students who copied off each other). After we called time, I went to collect tests from people who were clearly trying to keep writing after the test was over. One student was all, "FINE FINE just let me write my name on it," so I let him ... and then he flipped to another page in the exam and quickly wrote in an answer to one of the questions. In front of me.

Obviously, no credit for him, and I'm going to approach him immediately when we call time on the next test. If he hasn't written his name on it, I'll just offer to write it for him ;)

  • @BriSox81 It was a week long break, we are back together and we are looking for a therapist to go to together to work on our communication issues. I know that was not the majority vote but we decided we are going to try again.

  • @phira - recipe! I will say that I think the measurement for the red pepper is off - it says 1 tsp, but that was NOT spicy at all (or my taste buds have all died) so next time I make it I'm going to try 1 Tbsp.  Also - I didn't want to use the plum tomatoes with basil, so I just used plain crushed tomatoes and added a bunch of Italian seasoning.  Worked out JUST fine :)

For the shrimp I literally just did olive oil, garlic, and dried miced onion, then cooked the shrimp for like 2 minutes a side (and added a little salt).

Not going to lie, I might be drooling a little writing this up... hm.

  • @KateJ16 - I want that! Definitely making that sauce soon. Thanks for the recipe!

  • We should start some sort of recipe page on this board... I feel like there are so many we could all share!

  • @BriSox81 I know that is not what you wanted to hear, but oh well, I wanted opinions and I got what I wanted and I am working them into our plan that we agreed on. So no need for that in my opinion.
