help finding a small wedding venue

Hi,

I got engaged last week and am starting to look for a venue.  I've searched on the boards but haven't found anything quite right.  I'm hoping someone can help!

My fiance and I live in London.  He is British but I grew up in New England.  We're planning to have our wedding either in Rhode Island or Massachusetts (I'll post again on the MA board!).  But we'll be planning from London.

It will be a small wedding (about 40-60 people) and our guests will be coming from the US, Asia and Europe.  Most have never been to New England so I'm looking for a spot that would be a nice introduction to the area!  Other thoughts:

(1) exclusive use of the venue
(2) accommodations on-site or very close (walking distance would be ideal)
(3) a decent amount outside space with a great view (ocean?)
(4) a casual but elegant affair, perhaps a nice restaurant, where the guests could wander around and feel comfortable.  Eat when they want, dance when they want, sit and chat when they want.

Any ideas?  Thank you very much!!

Are you looking for something in Boston, or the surrounding areas? Or both? Do you have a budget? That may help us make suggestions

Ocean View Inn and Resort Gloucester MA - small house like inn, accomodations on site..directly on ocean..this was our first choice but too small for our 150 guests..would be perfect for a smaller sized group

    Hi,

Thanks for your quick responses.  I'm looking both in Boston and the surrounding areas.  Since so many folks will be traveling, we want it to be within a few hours of either JFK or Logan airports.  But otherwise, I'm really flexible.

I have to admit....I don't have a budget yet.  I have no idea what to expect!  But maybe $150/plate or less.

    Thanks again!

One of the mansions, like the Aldrich estate, in Newport would be beautiful! Price-wise, I would guess that it's closer to $150. If you're willing to forego the ocean view and have a view of Boston Common instead, Hampshire House is really nice.

Anything in Newport or Boston proper are going to be pricey, but since you're willing to be anywhere in MA or RI, you can definitely find picturesque places that won't break your budget.

The Lyman estate is gorgeous, and they have a smaller house they also rent out.  It was out of our budget. But it might be something you like

Atlantica restaurant in Cohasset (just south of Boston) is beautiful.  It's right on the harbor.  They also own a hotel next door, the Cohasset harbor inn.  The plates range from $65-90pp.

What time of year? We got married at the Millennium Hotel in Fanueil Hall - perfect for tourists.  We had about 75 ppl and it was great. I also just went to a wedding at Rialto, in the Charles hotel. It's nice for a small wedding, plus Cambridge is great to walk around for tourists.  I believe there are outdoor options there, too, whereas the Millennium just overlooks Faneuil Hall, though in the warm weather you can open the doors to step out onto the balcony (we got married in Feb, so we didn't do that :)

    Good luck!

It will be in September or October.

These are awesome ideas -- I'll check them all out.  Thanks very much!
