Wedding Colors Help?

Hi Everyone,

I'm stumped on wedding colors and my fiance is indifferent about them ("Whatever you like" - thanks, but that isn't helpful! >_<). Our wedding is next June at a venue by the lake, taking place at around sunset. The reception will be at the same location, but indoors. There aren't huge windows in the reception hall so what it'll look like outside won't really affect what it'll look like on the inside, and there aren't any distinct features about the hall.

My only sort-of starting point is that I've always loved crimson/dark red. I've talked with my bridesmaids about tentatively wearing crimson/dark red dresses. Should I go from there, or start from scratch? I've looked through tons of photos for red weddings but it's hard to feel it out without having any actual experience with these things. :(

I'm troubled because dark red doesn't go with much. Red and green would look Christmasy (as would red and white), red and yellow is too much on my Chinese side than I'd care to go, red and blue feels like it would contrast too hard. I am attracted to the idea of red and black, but I'm worried about that looking gothic/pretentious/bad. If there was a way to pull that off elegantly though I'd love that!

I'd be really interested in hearing what you guys think!!

  • What's your venue look like? Blank slate? Colors?

Otherwise, go with what you like. What about keeping the red as your main color and using neutrals/metallics as your other colors? Or keeping red purely as an accent (e.g. flowers versus dress color)? What about red and champagne?

  • This is what the reception hall looks like: http://www.warmemorialcenter.org/rental_information/images/MemHallSmall2.jpg http://www.mywedding.com/georgeandnikki/images/MemHallSmall.jpg This is what the area for the wedding looks like: http://www.mywedding.com/georgeandnikki/images/FitchPlazaSmall.jpg http://www.warmemorialcenter.org/Images/home_wedding.jpg I have no idea. :( I'm worried that since the lighting is low in the reception hall that darker colors would make it look drab.

Ha. I pulled blues, grays and greens for FI's input because I wanted to avoid drowning them all in a sea of pink. I got, "This looks like the Civil War!" and air punches, but no real feedback.
Yeah, I think I'll stick to talking colors with the girls.

ETA: as for your red question, it's up to you, but we pulled red out of our color options precisely because it's so hard to work with. If you really want it, I'd keep it in the flowers and use a neutral or metallic with it.
  • what about a neutral color with red accessories?  Like the girls could wear black dresses with red belt/shoes, flowers, etc.  http://kivalophotographyblog.com/red-black-wedding-album-maine-wedding-photographer/

  • I'm doing a burgundy and I'm pairing it with champagne and ivory and then using gold accents. I have been to a lot of red and black weddings though (almost all of them seem to use that combination) and I think that can look really nice together.

  • You could use your favourite colour and your FI's favourite colour.  Or you could go with the red and maybe use gold or something as an accent colour or just neutrals or whatever you think "goes".  This website might be helpful: http://www.theperfectpalette.com/search/label/Red

  • My advice is to forget about "wedding colors" and think about a friend (or famous person in a magazine)'s living room you really love. Or a bar you think is so chic. Or a restaurant that just feels so cozy. And then think about their colors. There might be a lot of red. Or a highlight of red.

Contrary to popular opinion, your wedding colors do not need to be "Absurdly-named Color #1" and "Ridiculously-named Color #2". Like periwinkle and aqua marine, or lilac and lavender, or champagne and cinnamon. Have you EVER been in a nice restaurant, or bar, or lounge, or living room that you could identify with 2 ridiculously-named colors? Personally, I have not.

Take a look at this: There's also white, black, brown, and tan. And patterns.
  • I really like the crimson/burgundy, light pink/blush and ivory combo. Here's a pic a quick googled:

It would be lovely to swap out ivory for champagne or another neutral.

  • I would urge you not to get too hung up on color-coordinating every element of your wedding.  Most of your details will go unnoticed and I'd hate for you to spend hours stressing over exact shades.  That said, I think red is fine regardless of your venue or the season.  Ditto PP that red and aqua are a stunning combo.  I also think dark red would look gorgeous with champagne/blush/ivory.
