Math Inspiration?

My wedding is a long ways off still, but I'm enjoying poking around for fun ideas during my down time as my life is about to be much too hectic to give this a second thought for quite a while.

That said, while our wedding is going to be mostly retro/vintagey in nature I'm looking for some ideas for integrating a math theme into it as well. Our date is 3.14.15 (PI day!) and my Caucasian self will be wedding my Chinese, math degree holding, FI.

Any ideas are welcome, I'm having a hard time finding things that I can do that are fun and cute but not...ridiculous or just plain cheezy.

Re: Math Inspiration?

  • Hi and congratulations on your engagement!

A math theme sounds fun and quirky! I apologize in advance if some of my ideas are on the cheesy side.

    1. You could incorporate equations either on the paper goods (invitations, programs, escort cards, etc). I think you could incorporate something about how pi is never ending and neither is your love.

I know this is totally cheesy but there once was a boy band named 2gether and they had a song that went, "I know my calculus, it says you + me = us" and while it might evoke a few eye rolls, I find it to be cutesy and silly.

I know your fiance is not an engineer but it involves math so perhaps this equation would be helpful for you, it's called the engineers romantic letter: click me

    2. I know the number 3 is considered lucky in Chinese culture so perhaps you could incorporate elements in sets of three for the wedding; three small vases placed together on a table to create a larger centerpiece, etc.

    3. Offer pies to your guest during dessert

    4. I found a website where a couple incorporated learning into the table numbers. On one side it displayed the table value and on the back it gave information about the table value, for example the pi symbol and then on the back a description of what pi is: click me

My only concern when identifying tables using something other than numerical order is to find a way for the tables to go in some type of order so guests don't wander around the room for 15 minutes trying to find where the "infinity symbol" table is.

    5. Someone created an escort card board where guests could find out which table they were seated at by doing basic math, for example John is at 66-65 which would be table one. click me

    6. Math cake! click me

    Good luck with your planning!
  • What about flash cards for your table numbers?  Or you could put the equation on the escort card, and the answer is the table number.  Unless that would be too hard for people to figure out. :)
  • I love this idea!  Do some searches for Fibonacci sequence in nature.  It turns up all kinds of objects that could be used for centerpieces/flowers and is a subtle tip of the hat to your mathematically inclined FI.  Examples include sea shells, pine cones, succulents and numerous kinds of flowers.

My FI just chimed in that since you are getting married on 3.14.15, you could serve pie in addition to or instead of cake.  ;)

    <div>Amazing idea!</div>
  • I love the idea of the flash cards for table numbers if you keep them super simple. Tie this in maybe with your cake as well?
Also being its his side more with the math maybe you could incorporate it in his bout somehow... I've seen some awesome untraditional bouts lately which is a totally fun way to incorporate a theme into the guys wardrobe :)
  • I am a mathematician and all my life I've thought that the mobius strip should be included in the wedding somehow.  Perhaps a wedding band..image.  Another idea for a wedding band would be image  Use an abacus in your decor...perhaps as table centerpieces? or maybe dahlias (Fibonacci numbers) image

You could put wedding favors in geometric boxes image

    I love these invitations....image

And how about this wedding cake?  image
