The NIH panel isn't going to reschedule; they're just going to skip this cycle and go on to the next one (which is around the time the Reps say they're going to shut down the government again). That means we're going to run out of funding, and I'm going to be out of a job. And while theoretically I could go work in a different lab, this same thing is happening to pretty much everyone.
Fuck.
Great job being the fiscally conservative party, assholes - not only have you saved not one red penny on social programs, you've just created a whole wave of scientists who will need to be on welfare and medicaid.
Re: Fuck the Republicans.
Well said, Kuus, though I think the title could use a little work. Obviously feel free to disagree.
SUCKAGE ALL AROUND.
We were told that during the shutdown, if it wasn't resolved by the FY 2014 hit and the FDA couldn't accept user fees from PDUFA, we were in jeopardy of having our study shut down because the company wouldn't be able to submit their NDA for approval. We're so close to being finished with this freaking study and they'd shelve it all because they couldn't justify the cost of going on with it when they had no idea when they'd see a ROI if they didn't have approval. Thankfully, we are okay. I have a friend on another project whose upper management had a call with the FDA that got cancelled so her project is canned. They'll try again next year in 2014, probably 2015 but they wanted to devote company resources to things that are more stable.
So that means one less drug for cancer. And all those labs competing for dwindling NIH funding- that's one less target for cancer which means one less class of medications for treating disease. So fuck you Republicans (and the few Democrats who were shitstains too). Because when it's your mother, father, kid, grandkid, best friend, etc. who is failing all known treatments- you can tell them you wanted to make sure Obamacare didn't go through that they don't have medication.
This whole shutdown fiasco, well really the last year with the sequester and all as well, is an excellent reminder to get your ass out there and cast your vote. That's how to effect some damn change.
That of course doesn't solve any of the other problems.
