Our wedding cake FELL OVER!

If anyone is from the Houston, Texas area do NOT use Virginia's Cakes. We spent just under $1,000 on my wedding cake, which I think is a lot not sure if it actually is. Anyways, on wedding wire they had great reviews and after we met with Virginia we felt really confident in our decision. She seemed to have lots of experience and really know what she was doing. She actually sketched out both our wedding cake and our groom's cake. Anyways, fast forward to our wedding day and we arrive to our reception to be met with our guests informing us that my cake had FALLEN OVER. I never even got to actually see my cake in person. Our venue had  a sheet cake on hand that we were able to use as well as the extra cake we had Virgina make since we had more guests then the cake would feed. Thank goodness for that, or we wouldn't have even had a cake to cut. Our vendor told us after they cleaned up the cake, that it did not appear  that there was any real support inside the cake to hold it up. Regardless, my mom and I were pretty upset after paying nearly $1000 dollars on this cake that we didn't even get to use at my wedding. When my mom called to speak with Virginia and ask for some kind of refund, Virginia shrugged it off like it was not a big deal and then proceeded to accuse my mom of stealing one of her mirrors! I am a pretty easy going person, but being rude to my mother is just unacceptable to me. Especially to a customer who paid so much money for one of your cakes! It would've been different to me if she owned up for her mistake and apologized for it. But to accuse the venue of making it fall over, and then my mother of stealing and not even admitting that a wedding cake falling over is an issue is unacceptable to me. Maybe this is crazy, but I thought after my mom called and explained the situation that she may try and call me to personally apologize, but of course she didn't. Maybe it is selfish to have thought someone would do that, but I know if it had been me I would've been mortified and I would've contacted the bride and groom to at the very least apologize. She ended up giving us the refund, begrudgingly. I wanted to pass this information along to other brides to make sure that whoever you chose to make your cake knows what they are doing and gives your cake proper support! Even then you can't be sure, because Virginia told us all the right things but we were so so wrong.

I included a picture of my wedding cake that a guest got before it fell ( you can even tell it is leaning ). I also included the pictures of the cake we ended up having to cut, which unfortunately was not the cake I dreamed of and we can never get those memories/pictures back.

Re: Our wedding cake FELL OVER!

  • That's BAD.  If you haven't already, put this on your local.  You and your husband look fantastic though.  I hope you don't let this ruin everything.
  • what happened to the part of the cake that fell over? who got to eat that?

    1. you guys do look very good, i agree with 6 on that AND on posting to your local.

    2. at least you got your money back and had a substitute cake available.

    3. you'll be able to laugh about it in the future, it really didn't ruin your day. was the cake that you actually cut good at all?

(i wonder if there are people who really dream of the wedding cake, but in thinking about my own wedidng cake i guess they do? i love cake and might have a dream or two about cake - so i suppose it's possible.)

Yeah, my cake was on my top 5 list for sure.  I am a cakeaholic with no desire for recovery or rehab.

I did post it on my local and on any review site I could find. Thank you, our wedding was perfect anyways.. it's just a bummer this had to happen and our guests all saw.

Haha, not sure. We weren't even there yet at the time that it fell :(

Thank you! Yes, we were very lucky that our venue was able to improvise and find cake for us to cut and serve our guests. The cake was okay, it was just a normal sheet cake no special fillings or flavoring or anything, but what do you do? I just am mostly disgusted with her attitude after the fact towards my mom. I would be a whole lot more forgiving if she had apologized or taken any kind of responsibility which she did not. As to your comment about dreaming of wedding cakes,  I think I know a few people with a sweet tooth so big that they might! I personally am not huge on cakes in general, I really wanted a red velvet wedding cake but everyone convinced me to go traditional ( not that it ended up mattering much anyways :P).

  • The cake you got to cut was still pretty!  So that's good.  Sorry that was the first thing you had to deal with when you got there.

  • I'm the only reg on the board in Houston, and not in the market for a wedding cake, but good to know.

Sucks that it happened, and it sounds like you covered all of your bases. I'm hoping that you (at least) got a refund. I'm also glad that you didn't let it ruin your wedding day. Best wishes!

  • Congratulations on your marriage!  You two look beautiful!  I can't believe your cake fell over - reminds me of this cakewreck:

Where do all these crazy bakers come from?

  • Your photos are gorgeous, it looks like the rest of the day went beautifully! I'm so sorry you had to deal with that kind of frustration that day though, hopefully it is something you can laugh about in the coming years :)

I worked in a bakery for a few years that specialized in wedding cakes, that cake was most definitely constructed poorly! I would find some way to report the business, maybe through the BBB? Heck, you could even put the photo of the cake leaning on the company's yelp page, they shouldn't have done that to you. And they should have bent over backwards to right the situation.

Kudos to your venue though for having extra cake on hand, wedding win!

  • PirateBarbie, We did get a refund thank goodness (though it wasn't easy to get).

Gisellerina -Thank you! I am not sure how they can even bring wedding cakes like that to the venue. How embarrassing, especially considering she is kind of well known for wedding cakes in our area.

Rebl90 - Thank you. The rest of the day was great, kind of a bummer that it happened, but hey life goes on. That's what my parents keep saying. Everything 'bad' (aside from the cake) that happened they hid from me until the next day, so my bridal party / parents did an amazing job, I was really blessed.

I think my mom is trying to find that, my mom is seriously irked by the way they treated her. Own up to your mistakes instead of trying to push the blame on my family and the venue and then proceed to accuse my mom of stealing. It makes my blood boil talking about it. This mishap definitely allowed for our venue to shine because they really did a phenomenal job handling it.

  • First, 1K for a cake that size??  Good lord cakes are expensive in Houston!

I'm glad you ended up getting a refund, because that is really awful that it fell over, but I've got to ask....WTH was wrong with your friend that she took that picture and didn't bother to tell anyone the cake was going to fall?    I've got a picture of my friends wedding cake clearly leaning, and I told the wedding coordinator as soon as it was clear that the angle of the lean was progressing and they disassembled the cake right away so the bride and groom at least had an edible cake.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

Yes, everywhere we priced out cakes was around that ball park. Granted, this place was the most expensive we talked to (and after this experience, I will never understand why) but we were able to get a military discount that made it more comparable to others. We also had a smaller cake [not pictured] since we needed the cake to serve 200 people, and I think that one was meant to serve either 150 or 175. Maybe that's why she half assed our cake, since we didn't pay full price (the cake was over $1000 initially) Who knows. But yes, it's funny you say that because multiple people came up to me saying they felt so bad because they noticed it leaning but didn't say anything. I don't think anyone really expected it to fall, and I can't really blame them either I guess.

  • So sorry to hear about what happened!  I'm glad you didn't let it ruin your day and that you got some of your money back.  And I'm super impressed with your venue that they not only found a cake for you, but even decorated it with flowers.  I realize it isn't what you envisioned, but it still looks pretty.

I am astounded at the prices of wedding cakes I see on these boards. Insanity. It makes me wonder if someone ordered that exact same type of cake, but didn't tell the bakery it is for a wedding, if that would cut the price in half, lol.

My wedding cake and groom's cake were like $120-$130 total, but my sister picked them up from the bakery and the wedding cake was assembled by my mom and aunt at the venue.  Plus it was a small wedding of about 35 guests, though between the two cakes it probably would have fed 50-60.
