Another Allegiant thread -- this time with SPOILERS!!

I just finished.

I am sad right now. I cried.

And I obviously now understand why Veronica wrote it in 2 points of view.

I will say, I liked the ending of this better than the ending of HG.

I'll have more soon, I'm still trying to recover.

Re: Another Allegiant thread -- this time with SPOILERS!!

  • I agree - I didn't want to say anything about the two points of view until we were discussing the whole book!  I also got frustrated with that, but I get it.

And props to her for taking the not-as-traveled road to the end of the book - I had to re-read that chapter because I was so stunned as to what actually happened and didn't believe I read it right!

  • When that chapter ended (before it switched completely to Tobias), I didn't believe it. I was like oh she probably just passed out and had one of those weird almost-dead-but-coming-back moments. It wasn't until Tobias returned to the compound and they told him that I was like OMFG.

Tris really bugged me throughout most of Insurgent. She definitely got back in my good graces in this book, though. It seemed like she grew up a lot between the 2. I guess it was after the incident at Erudite when she almost died and then she had that revelation that I started liking her again.

  • I totally agree - she was getting on my nerves a lot, but definitely seemed to redeem herself in this book.  There were several quotes throughout that I really liked, and all revolved around things that obviously signaled that she had developed some more sense of self and grown up a bit.

I kept reading thinking "oh they're going to find out that the memory serum also re-sets a body and people don't die" or something - I just kept waiting for it to happen, and then it never happened!

  • I finished it last night. I'm not sure if I liked it or not to be honest. I'm okay with Tris dying, I saw it coming for awhile but I felt like she made Tobias into a really weak character and that was disappointing for me. I still don't like the two perspectives thing. I would've preferred one perspective until Tris died and then a switch to Tobias for everything that came after. Also, I felt like she was really trying at the end to make it seem like Tris's sacrifice was worth it and everything was turning around but honestly it just didn't hold together for me, it wasn't just the people in the compound that were prejudice and I felt like she way over simplified the complex world she had been building at the end. Oh and I feel like she stole the memory serum thing from the Matched series. But maybe I'm judging too harshly.

I definitely still liked this better than The Hunger Games though. I did like what she did with Peter and Caleb's characters, the general story line was good, and Tris was better in this book than in Insurgent.

  • @Swazzle and @bethsmiles -- Would you overall say Allegiant is worth reading? I re-read the first 2 this week in anticipation of getting it, and then I went to order it on Amazon and saw spoilers. I'm not sure I really want to read it since Tris dies. I feel like I will just end up hating it. :(

  • @desertsun -  I never like to leave a series unfinished but I don't think this book is necessarily worth reading. Tris's death aside, I didn't think the writing was anywhere near as good as the first two books and I wasn't as drawn into the story as I was with the rest of the series. I was really let down with this book as a whole.

BUT other people seemed to have really liked it so I don't know maybe you should read it and see for yourself.

  • @bethsmiles, thanks for your thoughts. I think I'll pass on Allegiant and just look forward to Horde instead. :)

  • @desertsun - what is Horde? I'm always looking for more good books to read!

  • @bethsmiles, it's the new book in Ann Aguirre's dystopian YA series. The first one is Enclave. I like the series pretty well so far, despite an annoying love triangle.

And, another YA I read not that long ago that I liked a lot, though it is more traditional fantasy, is Graceling:

  • Oh! Enclave is on my list of books to read. Maybe I'll move it up the list since you like it.

And oh the annoying love triangles...I wish writers would stop with those!

  • Yes. I sometimes feel like love triangles are the easy way out. "I can't figure out how to get my plot tight enough or my pacing right, so I'll just throw in a love triangle to keep people reading."

It is less annoying in Aguirre's series b/c of the way it is set up. So I guess if the author makes the characters and their motivations somewhat believable, it's okay. But too often it just isn't believable and therefore comes off as a cheap device.

  • I just finished. I'm annoyed rather than sad.

I'm annoyed that a FB friend who got a hold of a leaked copy a week early spoiled the fact that someone died, even though I didn't know who, I figured it had to be either Tris or Four because she was pretty sad about it. Once I knew what the final plan was, I knew it would be Tris. 1) It explained the annoying POV switching and 2) it fit with her character and showed she was more selfless that she thought she could be.

Frankly, I'm annoyed because I wanted Tris and Four to have a happy ending. They solve the city's problems and go live happily ever after. There's enough bad stuff in real life. I want happy entertainment. I feel kind of cheated after staying invested for so long.

Surprisingly, I didn't cry. I don't even feel sad. And yes, I have been known to tear up at character deaths.
  • @leia1979 - I didn't cry when Tris died either and I've downright sobbed at character deaths in other books. I understand your feeling cheated after finishing Allegiant.
