Looking for an affordable, modern venue

I'm trying to find an affordable venue in Massachusetts that's more modern rather than the "wedding factory" banquet hall style. I like a lot of windows with a clean/ minimal look. I really like places like the Artists for Humanity Epicenter and museums like the ICA or MFA, but the fees for the space are just way too high. Any recommendations? I'd be open to a hotel or a function facility as long as it looks more unique or non-traditional than a typical ballroom. We're estimating around 75 guests and are looking for a Saturday in May or June 2014. A large number of guests will be coming from the Springfield area, so I'm open to being more west of Boston, but I've also got family that will be flying in to Logan too, so I don't really want to go too far out. Places that allow outside caterers or to bring your own alcohol are great, but not if it costs $5000 to use the space. Thanks for any ideas you can give me and let me know if you need any more information!

  • I'm not sure if it's too far (or what the prices are) but the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem does wedding receptions.

  • Have you looked into the Exchange Conference Center in the Seaport?

Ipswich country Club has floor to ceiling windows and a budget friendly venue price!
  • Thanks for the suggestions, ladies! Please keep them coming!
  • I just recently got engaged and was also looking at the Artists for Humanity Epicenter but, like you, just can't justify paying $5000 with not one, single thing included.  I've been looking around but I'm having trouble because I need somewhere with space to include about 200.

    Good luck with your search!
  • Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill. I got married last August and it was beautiful and affordable!
  • Check out the Cyclorama in the South End. They offer a discounted price for summer weddings and you might be able to find what you're looking for there.
  • **Sidenote about the Cyclorama** They allow all outside vendors, so we're buying our own liquor, using our own caterer, and bargain shopping for tables/chairs.
  • We just got married at the Lenox Hotel in Back Bay...there is no fee to have your reception there, $2000 to have the ceremony fee which we were able to negotiate to get for $1000.  That being said, they don't allow outside vendors since they have several restaurants on site - but people raved about the food!  Our package also included a signature drink at cocktail hour and wine & champagne with dinner - although I think their packages have recently changed....  We were the only wedding there that weekend & they treated us like royalty!
  • My top two venues were Topsfield Commons and Cruiseport Gloucester.  Both have very clean lines, all wood floors, tall ceilings, and large open windows.  They are not the gilded ballroom look that I detest or the standard function room look.  We ended up at Cruiseport Gloucester because I thought they were far more upfront about their pricing and we couldn't have been happier.
  • I second ipswich country club!! Just attended a wedding there and it was beautiful! My favorite is crane estate in ipswich - not sure if that's what you're looking for though :)
  • Old Sturbridge Village?  Right between Springfield and Boston and the rental fee is very reasonable someone else posted it not long ago.  Not overly modern though but their larger room may be what you have in mind. Zukas is another if you don't mind a tent but I would check it out first because someone on another board mentioned the tent was a bit run down looking.  GL!
