XP: Is this too theme-y for a non-theme wedding??

I'm trying to include things that FI and I love/ love to do together in our reception.  I want to avoid having either a theme wedding or a hodge podge of things that look thrown together.  So far, we're thinking chocolate and champagne/ gold for colors and I'd like to stay fairly consistent there.

FI grew up in NYC and is a subway history fan, and it's one of my favorite things to photograph. For NYC Subway elements I am thinking of a subway map as a seating chart (printed in a sepia tone), table numbers that are pictures of subway stops for places we've been together, maybe with a little blurb about something we did at that place in the city or why it's important to us (this would be on chocolate brown card stock, on picks stuck into the centerpieces).  We are considering potted mums (a gorgeous golden yellow color) wrapped with sepia toned subway maps for centerpieces (alternately, I could wrap the pots in brown or gold fabric or paper).  For favors, I am considering either monogrammed sugar cookies or black & white cookies (they can be frosted in any color, but that's the type of cookie) in clear bags with a chocolate and gold bow.

Then I'm worried that the non-subway/ NYC elements are going to look silly.  Our cake is going to be a Lego cake similar to this one (Legos were involved in FI's proposal).  Our guest book will be a vintage VW picture like this (we are restoring a '73 VW Fastback together).

Is this all going to look thrown together? Overly theme-y? I know that no one is going to obsess over these details, but I would still like it to look like we've put some thought into it.  Thanks!

  • I don't think it is theme-y other than the theme being the two of you. I think they all sound fun and personal. GL!

  • Thanks! I am trying to avoid having it look like a subway themed kid's birthday party. A theme can be done well, but there is such an idea as "too much of a good thing." Better to get an opinion now than before I start the DIY projects and wonder "what I was thinking?!"

  • nope, not too theme-y at all.  We own an auto shop so we included auto makes for the table names instead of numbers and we made the escort cards w/ little hot wheels cars.  Other than that our wedding was our colors with candles and flowers as centerpieces and a photo book for the guest book. The little reflections of "us" were a hit and not over the top so people really liked how it all came together.

  • Thanks!  I think I'm still reeling from an over-the-top, in-your-face candy themed wedding from earlier this year.  It was like something out of Willy Wonka.  Now, they put a lot of effort into that and I'm not complaining, it just isn't what I'm going for.  I can barely decorate our living room, so putting this together has been interesting to say the least lol.

  • I really like the lego cake. Before looking at the picture I was thinking it would be tacky, but it's really cute.

  • Lol, I had the same thought when FI mentioned that he saw a Lego wedding on gizmodo. In fact, just googling "lego wedding cake" brings up some real beauties.  Luckily, this one is subtle and doesn't look like something out of a planning guide for a 5 year old's birthday party :)
