I scheduled my wedding during the weekend of a HUGE event! Oops!

It has recently come to my attention that I planned my wedding during Comic Con, which is a HUGE deal every summer in San Diego. With all the excitement, working around already reserved days at my two venues, and making sure I wasn't planning it during a holiday or a time when it would be difficult for people to travel, somehow one of our biggest events slipped my mind and now it's too late to change everything. So my problem is that hotels will be at skyrocket prices and will book up faster than you can imagine. I'm already working on finding rates at a variety of places in the area and possibly reserving a block of rooms. My question is this: I'm setting up my wedding website. Should I admit my mistake, warn them of the prices and urge my guests to book a room ASAP or should I, in a positive way, urge them to book ASAP and mention that it's Comic Con weekend and use this as a point of interest for their stay? For example, "While you're in town, we recommend checking out the Comic Con madness downtown. Even if you don't have tickets for the convention, the people watching is second to none!"

Thanks in advance!

  • Fess up and let them know to book fast and why. Otherwise, people may take their time without a worry and end up having nowhere to stay. Work on getting a block of rooms at a locked in rate ASAP
  • I would book a block of rooms and either explain everything to people and/or put something on your website like "Our wedding will be on the same weekend as Comic Con, a very popular event.  Because San Diego will be so busy at that time, we recommend booking a hotel room soon.  We booked some rooms at Julio's Hotel if you are interested." and then maybe put more information about other hotels regarding availability and price.

  • Thanks to both of you. I'll do a combo of both and cover all my bases.
  • Also I would feel free to mention the blocks and the business of the weekend to guests as you talk to them socially before the wedding.  Our wedding was during  a big football game that was happening in a neighboring town.  While it didn't affect booking hotels, it was something I mention to OOT guests as a warning.

I like this idea along with the word of mouth letting people know about Comic Con and the need to book rooms quickly.  Best of luck!

I would be a little more specific about recommending that people book early, and that the hotels will fill up.  Your 85 year old great aunt probably does not know what Comic Con is, or what it means for her hotel booking.
  • How many out of town guests are we talking about?

  • I live in San Diego as well. Are you getting married downtown? I had some friends who got married during Comic Con a couple years ago. Their wedding was in La Jolla and they didn't have hotel room problems. I think it's smart to work on your room blocks ASAP, though.
  • Big fan of Comic Con. Yes you need to explain to your guests why because most likely they won't know what it is. Comic Con is HUGE. Definitely push for them to book early. Booking last minute, whether it's last minute for the room block date or last minute to travel they will be either NOT finding a hotel room at all close OR paying close to a plane ticket to stay (depending on the hotel).

If you're not having the Ceremony and Reception at the same location I would also plan for maps and routes to take. Yes you might not be near the convention center, but there will be so many people walking around that it might make traffic insane too.

Ic07 - La Jolla is way north of where the convention center is where Comic Con is held. So unless they were coming from there, it wouldn't of effected them =) which was good for them.

  • Oh snap! I'm agreeing with previous posters about letting people know. I just came in here to add that if you're getting married in the gaslamp, you should totally go out and take official wedding pictures with people in their cosplay. It would be awesome!
