FSIL..ugh....

I don't know, I just don't.  I spend as much time as I can with FSIL and I can't help but SMH when I am with her.  We went out to lunch recently, just the 2 of us, and we were discussing family holidays.  She came straight out and said that she doesn't cook and that she doesn't want to put the burden of cooking on her husband as he doesn't like feeling pressured.  She asked if I could do Christmas Eve instead, since (as she put it) "You cook all the time and have a better working knowledge of the kitchen. You probably won't burn the food."  I told her I would have to discuss it with FI as I didn't want to say yes and find out that he wants to go to FFIL's house instead.

I had Thanksgiving here last year and it was a huge success.  My FSIL brought an Apple Pie and Ice Cream, which she said she was going to bring.  My FMIL brought over some weird Cranberry sauce, but it was pretty tasty.  Thanksgiving I can handle as the tradition is turkey, mashed potatoes, candied yams, stuffing, gravy, corn and some other veggie, and desserts.  Christmas Eve, I'm unsure of their family traditions and I don't want to throw my family traditions into it and have it not be accepted...or liked.  I've talked with FI about Christmas Eve and he said that he doesn't see why we couldn't do it, but he wants to wait until after Thanksgiving as we need to talk with FFIL to see what his plans are.

FSIL called last night, and started asking about Christmas Eve.  We just had lunch last Wednesday, so I told her, (again) that FI and I have to discuss it more and would get back to her.  She said she needs to know so she can start planning on what to bring.  I told her we have a month and a half to worry about what to bring and that I should know by Thanksgiving if we are doing Christmas Eve.  She said that she needs to know by Friday.  I told FI and he said told me to not worry about it.

Why is FSIL being so demanding on something like this?  Last year we didn't know what was going on for Christmas Eve until the week before.  Why does she need to know by Friday for this year??? Arg!!!!!

Re: FSIL..ugh....

  • Some people need to make plans early for any number of reasons.  I'm guessing if you aren't doing Christmas Eve she needs to make other plans now. Have the FI either make plans by Friday or tell her it just won't work this year.

  • Maybe she wants to be sure to score the best deal on an ice cream sale?
  • I wonder if "I need to know what to bring" = I need to know whether I'm showing up or booking that Aruba trip. Or spending the holiday with other friends.

This (or something like it) is what it sounds like to me. It's odd that she gave you a specific deadline.

I don't know.  I spoke with FMIL and she said that FSIL doesn't need to know by Friday.  She was just saying that to get a rise out of me.  I told FMIL that there is no reason for me to make such a big decision so soon. Out of everyone, I should be the only one really worried about Christmas Eve...especially if I decide to have it.  I told FMIL that I would make the decision after Thanksgiving.  She said that she understands and will pass the word along to FSIL.

    Hahaha, Yea, maybe.

I doubt that FSIL will be planning a trip during Christmas.

When I asked FMIL (since FSIL was working last night) why there was such a crazy deadline, FMIL didn't know what to say.  FI said that she probably thinks that Thanksgiving is closer then it really is.  To which I chuckle because we have a few weeks until Thanksgiving.  FI has said that his sister has quirks that even he doesn't understand.

Needless to say, I'm still trying to decide if I want to have Christmas Eve.  I have to factor in some things, like our 3 dogs.  I'm thinking that maybe I'll do Christmas Eve this year....but I have to see what FFIL has planned.  I have a feeling that he and FSMIL are going to Tennessee to visit my FSSIL.
