Storing the dress?

Hi ladies,

I'm getting married in October 2014. I ordered my dress at the end of August/beginning of September, and it should be arriving at the salon right around Christmas (or the week before). How would I store the dress until the wedding? Obviously will be taking it to and from the salon for alterations and stuff, but other than that, what should I do with it? I've seen some people say to keep it lying flat, away from windows (if the garment bag is not transparent is that still something to keep in mind?) Thanks! :)

  • I think it is best to keep it in the bag, lay it flat (or else the weight of the gown will pull on the straps or those little things for strapless gowns), out of light.  This website might be helpful: http://www.wednet.com/wedding-dresses/wedding-articles/how-to-store-a-wedding-dress

  • Great, thanks for your reply and for the link! :)

  • Will your salon hold on to it for your?  Mine came in around Christmas time and I wasn't getting married until July.  The salon just held it until alterations started and then the alterations lady held on to it.

  • My salon wouldn't keep my dress for me because I ordered it really early. I have it stored in the garment bag and laying on the floor under the bed in our guest room. I was concerned about the light even though my garment bag isn't clear.

  •  I'd think what you're currently doing with your dress is fine. It's out of the light, covered by the garment bag, and laying flat. All of the things you're going to want to do! I had mine in a garment bag, laying flat on our spare-room bed, for about a year. I had no issues with light damaging the dress through the bag.

I've read (and been told by bride-friends) that you can store it by doing the following:
-place a white flat sheet on a spare bed or open, uncrowded floor space
-lay your wedding gown flat on the white sheet, trying not to let any of it bunch up
-on top of your gown, lay another white flat sheet
-try to pick a space that is not in direct sunlight, or close the blinds if necessary
The sheet will keep dirt and dust from collecting on your gown over the few months it will be stored, and a white sheet won't transfer dye or anything onto your gown.  Depending on the garment bag, it might be thick plastic which can sometimes smell funny... maybe I'm just picky, but I don't want my gown to sit in its plastic bag for those months!

I'll be doing this with mine, once it comes in in January! :)
