NER Work Dinner Gathering Menu

Hi all! So FI's awesome work friends are coming over to our house in a couple weeks and I'm planning the menu. The other two gatherings we've been to have been pot luck, but we're providing everything this time, unless someone offers. 17 people including us. Both gatherings have been very casual.  I'm trying to think of things I can do a day or two before since I'll only be home from work for two hours before people come over.

Apps:
-brushetta bites baked in puff pastry in mini muffin pan
-baked brie & jam in puff pastry
-chips & dip

Main:
-minestrone soup
-stuffed shells: regular marinara & butternut sage
-oven roasted potatoes, carrots & green beans
-steak & chicken on the grill

Dessert:
-cheesecake
-pumpkin squares

What am I missing beside copious amounts of booze? :)

  • Sounds wonderful.  I think you're good.

  • Sounds like a good mix of food that should make just about everyone happy with the selection.

If I would change anything I would add a chocolate dessert (even something simple like brownies) or switch something over to a chocolate based dessert.  I don't like pumpkin and I know a lot of people don't like cheesecake.

Maybe you could just do a bowl of Hershey Kisses?  Just something to satisfy those who like chocolate.

  • I think all of that sounds fantastic.
  • Sounds delicious!

I think you'll probably end up with people bringing some desserts too (just because I feel like that typically happens in gatherings like this).
  • Maybe a tossed green salad and sliced french bread?

    Both crowd pleasers!
  • This sounds delicious! Great menu and go you for taking all that on!

I agree with @itzMS on the salad and bread. Cheap and easy crowd pleasers.

  • FI said we should nix the soup. He's worried that we're going to come off as showy or whatever since the other ones have been pot lucks and most people brought things like a cheese ball and chips. I said we'd scale back since they are his co-workers. I held onto the brie for dear life- I've wanted to try the recipe for a while. Salad and bread is added and I'll think about dessert. Cheesecake was a hit at the last one, so it might be fine. I also have a whole thing of Halloween candy I'd put in a jar and leave out.
  • Oh wow, can I come? This all sounds fabulous!

  • I think it sounds great assuming that you know of dietary needs of your guests; My best friend is a Pescetarian with Celiac's disease so there isn't much she could eat on that menu. I agree with the PP who suggested a green salad.

She's mentioned they've had other dinners together so food limitations/restrictions would likely have come up before hand.

Could you use that to offset any "showiness"?  Would this particular crowd be cool with you mentioning how you love to cook and love having a bunch of new taste testers to try stuff out on?

That was exactly what I was thinking. We got so much new cookware/I've been on pinterest too much that I want to try so much stuff.
