Going Dress Shopping this weekend v. tips

Hello ladies! My wedding is August 10, 2013. I am going to go dress shopping this weekend with my mom and my MOH.

I just wanted to see if any ladies have any tips or tricks?

What type of underwear should I wear? I dont own a strapless bra, but I intend to try on strapless dresses. Im okay with tucking my bra in. Should I wear a spanx that I already have?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • If you think you will be wearing spanx the day of your wedding then there is no harm in wearing the day you try on dresses.  If not, then just wear a pair of underwear that are full coverage unless you are fine showing your booty off :)

Most stores have strapless bras or long line bras for you to use when trying on dresses so double check with them to see if that is possible.  If not, then either tuck in your bra straps or become really comfortable with the consultant and just go braless (I am sure they have seen it all).

I would also bring some water, a hair tie, and maybe even a snack with you because trying on dresses is tiring and hot.

Make sure to bring pictures or a good idea of what you like and don't like, but also be open minded.  The consultants are pretty good at picking a dress for you that you may have never even considered (that is how I got my dress).

And finally, make sure to be upfront about your budget and do not try on dresses over your budget no matter what.

  • Hold the phone...how do you not own a strapless bra?!? Can you buy one? Strapless bras are structured differently than regular bras and are kind of...designed...to wear with formalwear...

The salon will likely have a strapless longline you can borrow for trying on purposes, but they can be bulky and misshapen (as many brides have used them...)

If you wear spanx normally with dresses, wear them. Otherwise just wear any conservative (and clean!) underwear, as the consultant will be seeing them helping you in and out of dresses.

    rofl...yes please wear clean underwear!

I just started trying on dresses and learned a bit so far. Make sure you are open to what the consultant has to say about what will look nice on you. They see a lot of different body types and are usually versed in what works.

It also helps to know exactly what you don't want. The stylists I worked with they said it helped that I had already eliminated the things I really do not like.
  • I brought a nude strapless bra, but ended up taking it off because of the low backs that a lot of the dresses had (I am not modest). I'm a big fan of VS's seamless underpants.

Outside of what to wear keep in mind that there are literally thousands of options, but if you try on too many you'll probably get tired and confused. Be up front with the consultant about your budget and remember that you'll need alterations. You don't need to buy anything on your first trip - you have plenty of time to wait for the dress you love.

    Have fun!

I wore a regular white bra (don't own strapless either), but honestly the salon lady made me take it off because she wanted to put me in corset styles. Dunno if that's typical; we've only checked one store, but that's what she did.

Oh yeah, and just be clean. Undies too, but I made sure to scrub up, shave, apply the deodorant, use the mouthwash, etc.

Edit: I have to think things through, so I had the consultant start a file for me with the front-runners, and I got price quotes for those. We had a lady who was very experienced and she made suggestions based on my body type, skin tone, event plans, etc and also discussed accessorizing.
  • Ditto Maggie. I'm sure you've already figured out who is going with you, but don't bring too many! If you've already asked too many, I would go with an open mind and not have your heart set on finding the dress in one day. Though I was in and out in 45 mins and was completely happy.
  • I agree with what others have said. Here's my additional advice:

    1.  Take pictures of each dress (if they let you... most bridal shops will allow it).  Even if you aren't 100% sold on the dress.  I've had a few that I loved in the store, but didn't like so much the next day while looking at the photos I took.  And I've had some that I wasn't a huge fan of, but they looked awesome in the photos and the more I looked at the photos, the more I started to like them.

    2.  Along that same note, I think its best to sleep on it for a day or two before making the purchase.  And look through the photos of you in the various dresses.  If you can't stop thinking about that one dress, or you find yourself comparing everything else to it, then you know that is the one for you.

    3. Don't wear spanx or anything like that, unless you plan to wear it at the wedding.  The best way to try on dresses is to be wearing what you plan to wear at wedding (or as close as possible).  If you don't plan to wear spanx at wedding, the dress will look different or fit different, so don't wear it when trying dresses either.  If you plan to wear strapless dress, get a strapless bra, preferably the one you actually plan to wear at wedding... although that can change if you find dress that doesn't work with that bra.  Same with shoes, if you already have shoes you plan to wear or know what type of shoes you want (or size of heel), bring them along to try with the dresses.  They will also have heels there you can try with though.  I actually already have my wedding bra and wedding shoes, before I have the dress.  But, it definitely helps to really know how the look will end up.

    4. Most dresses will need alterations and they generally don't carry dresses in a lot of sizes to try on.  So be prepared to have dresses not fit 100% and know that it will only look better once you have the alterations & it is fitted to your body.

    5. Like others have said, trust the consultant.  Some of my favorite dresses were ones I never would have thought to try on, but consultant knew it would look awesome on me.

    6. Don't necessary expect to have that "OMG this is DEFINITELY my dress" moment where you burst into tears.  That doesn't happen for everyone.  And, from what I'm hearing, is actually very rare.  I went dress shopping last night and my consultant said she's only ever had 2 brides cry when they tried on dresses.  I've tried on about 50-60 dresses and still haven't felt like any of them are "the dress", but there have been some very nice ones that I like and would be content with.  I finally put hold on one last night, although I have a few more appointments this week before I actually purchase it, including appointment to try on dress that I've been drooling over for a few weeks online.

    7. Try to pinpoint and remember what you do and don't like about each dress.  If you like the neckline, the fit, the shape, specific details, etc. you can look for other dresses that incorporate that element, but might have other elements more suited to your style.  I've narrowed down exactly what I want in a dress now (neckline, bodice, silhouette, back, material), so now I'm just searching for the dress that encompasses it all, which saves me from trying on a lot of dresses I know I don't want.

    8. Whatever you do, don't get discouraged.  It can be a stressful process.  It's certainly a long, tiring process to try on a bunch of big, poofy dresses and figure out what your style is.  Bringing water & snack, especially if you have multiple appointments in one day, is a good idea.

    9.  Have a lot of fun with it!
