UK brides - custom charges ordering from US?

Hi ladies from the UK (or elsewhere outside the US!)

I've seen a couple of wedding items I'd like to purchase on Etsy from sellers based in the US (e.g. bracelets for my bridesmaids priced around $40) and I'm also looking to buy some koozies from a US website, has anyone had any experiences of ordering similar items and customs charges they may attract? I don't know whether it's worth what I would save by ordering from these places if I'm going to end up with unknown charges that would mean I'd be better off paying the higher prices from UK sites. I know I could order for delivery to my hotel when in Vegas but I'd rather have the things here in advance. 

All advice most appreciated!

    Hi, I'm not totally sure about the uk but I know in NZ that you only have to pay import tax if what your buying is new and over certain value, I think it's quite high here maybe $300? Again sorry I know it's not the UK but it maybe similar?

    I occasionally buy items from ebay sellers in the US. In my experience the sellers always mark these items as gifts and with a low value (it's got to be less than £36) so they don't incur VAT or customs charges. I looked into this very briefly as I was considering buying a dress from BHLDN. In the end I didn't because I was worried that the extra charges would amount to 30% of the total cost of the dress which would have resulted in charges of £100 and I wasn't sure what size to get (2 sizes = customs charges of £200 not ideal). Anyway, I'm not 100% on this but if goods are valued under £135 customs duties do not apply but import VAT (20%) and excise duties do.     Thanks @spoon1984 that's really helpful! I was also thinking of buying a BHLDN dress at one point but had the same issues as you.
