Movie review - 50/50 (with spoilers)

Talk about depressing.  Yes, it's about cancer, and we knew that going in, but we thought that with Seth Rogen, it would even things out a bit.  It was funny in some places, but not enough.

Joseph Gordan Levitt finds out he has a very rare form of cancer.  He has a mom who smothers him, so he doesn't answer her calls and his dad has Alzheimers and doesn't remember him.  His girlfriend swears she's going to take care of him but starts flaking on things and we find out she's cheating on him so he gets rid of her.  His BFF (Seth Rogen) uses his cancer as a way to get them laid, but JGL figures out sex is too painful, so that's out.  His chemo buddy dies.  Then he finds out his cancer didn't respond to the chemo and all that's left is a life threatening spinal surgery.

The surgery did work and he predictably ends up with his therapist (Anna Kendrick) so it does end happily.

Side note - thank goodness JGL doesn't rock the bald look IRL.

Re: Movie review - 50/50 (with spoilers)

  • I was working in the movie theater when this came out - Yeah people were not happy. With Seth Rogen in it people were expecting you know very vulgar, comedy about having cancer.

A lot of people came and got their money back or bad mouthed the movie because it wasn't what they were expecting. They were upset they sat through basically a depressing movie. Not what they wanted. I heard though from those who went and gave it a chance that it was a very good movie.

I'm too emotional, so I try to avoid watching movies like this. I'm glad to hear it had a happy ending! =)

  • it was based on/inspired by a true story - the script was written by Seth's IRL BFF, who had cancer when he was in his mid-20s.

i liked the movie, but i had read some of the backstory before seeing it, so I didn't go into the movie expecting a typical vulgar comedy.
  • PirateBarbie - Many unfortunately do not do this. Majority of movie goes go based on whose either in the movie OR what the trailers show you.

I didn't know that about the script. I knew it was based on a true story, just didn't know how close to home it was for Seth. I just know many didn't like it just because it wasn't a comedy like they had thought it was.

I really wish people would research their movies before going and seeing it. Haha, from an employee's point of view it would save us a lot of grief. hahaha oh well. Glad you guys enjoyed the movie =)
