Wedding Woes

Anyone have experience with any of these?

I'm researching the following for potential Christmas gifts.  Does anyone have any experience or feedback on these?
  • Kindle Fire HD
  • LeapPad 2
  • LeapPad Ultra
  • InnoTab

We have the Kindle Fire HD.

We absolutely love it.  Are you thinking about giving it to DD?  Both our DDs play it.  There are plenty of (free) apps for them.  It's easy to use and you can password protect it so she doesn't buy a bunch of stuff without you knowing (like our girls did).

We got it for xmas last year and have had only one issue.  Last week, it stopped charging.  I tried a couple troubleshooting things and it still wouldn't work.  I called Amazon and they said that since I already tried the things he was going to have me do, he was sending me a new one.  It was still under warranty.  I had a new one two days later.  Amazon's customer service is awesome.

  • Also, I'm not sure if you're a Black Friday shopper, but Best Buy is supposed to have them for $99.
  • Yes, it's for DD.  Since last Christmas we had planned on getting her the LeapPad2.  But then we saw the Ultra and like that is had wifi connectivity, but then we found out how much the Leap Frog apps cost and yada yada...  now we're thinking that the Kindle Fire is the way to go.  Much more flexibility than the Leap Frog stuff.
Anyhow, thanks for the review.  I think you helped to sell me on it (the customer service especially).
And yeah, we saw the Best Buy thing but I'm not sure it's worth saving $40 to go into BB on Black Friday.  <----- SO NOT A black friday shopper.
    Thanks!
  • One more question...  Do you have the Kindle with special offers or without?
  • My niece has a leapfrog but I'm not sure which one.  She prefers her mom's ipad.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Best Buy on Black Friday.  I think they're opening on TG day so it will probably be even more of a madhouse.

  • Consider an iPad mini 16G, wireless.  It's worth the extra dough based on the quality and quantity of apps available.

  • ::stalks thread:: we are considering getting a Kindle for DS to use. My iPad is 2 1/2 years old and having some issues. The Kindle price is way better than an iPad.
  • I did not ask for opinions about iPads and I will not consider an iPad because that's too expensive for a 5 year old.  Heck, that's too expensive for me.
I wasn't going to consider anything that wasn't designed for kids until I realized that the Kindle is so awesome and is cheaper than the LeapFrog Ultra.
  • DD has an innotab (yes, seriously...that was a grandma conspiracy). It's insufferably slow. this is a significant issue for am antsy pants toddler. hard to learn cause and effect when the effect takes 15-20 seconds to boot.

Their download website is really $$$$$. You'd be better off cruising iTunes, the Android download store, amazon, etc.

IMO, in the tablet world, you're going to get what you pay for. I'd seriously just invest in grownup technology. Could you consider a refurbished or used tablet for DD?

Hey AF...Don't get a puppy mill puppy from a pet store.  Adopt from a shelter!  ;)

  • I think the Kindle would save you money in the long run over the Leapfrog tablets. (free or very cheap apps vs $20-30 for a game). I was helping MIL and ySIL research them for 5yo niece.

I have a (1st generation?) Kindle Fire (the one released before any of the HD models) and a regular Kindle. I've had the Fire for about a year and a half, and I haven't had any issues. I use it for books, streaming movies, music, apps (like my C25K), and games. I carry it everywhere with me. I don't let Wolverine play with it on her own, but I will let her look at pics (and move/zoom on the touch screen) when I am trying to entertain her.

They didn't have the option for special offers when I got my Fire, but I have them on the regular Kindle. I think it cuts $20 or so off the price, doesn't impact play, and I actually have had some good deals come up (like $10 Amazon GC for $5). I'd say go with the special offers, and you may want to check into insurance/protection plan (in case she would drop it or something.)

I agree with you on the iPad - massive waste of money.
  • DD has a Leapster Explorer that was purchased used (at a thrift store, no less) and has lasted over 3 years.  We have a ton of LeapFrog products and feel like their quality is very good.  She could keep using the Leapster, but we feel like she's ready for an upgrade.  The LeapPad 2 is just so small compared to the Ultra - but the Ultra is rather new and they are having some issues.  I imagine that the Ultra2 will be better, but who knows when they'll get that out.
She uses my iPod touch, my Samsung Galaxy and DH's Samsung Note and is very good with them and very careful.
I originally did not want to spend more than $100 on something for her - but the Kindle Fire is only $139 and if we decide it doesn't work how we wanted it for her, then I can use it.
Or maybe I'll just give her my iPod.
  • I don't think you'll be disappointed in the Kindle if she's good with the other devices.
