I really love our neighbor, but...

He's a very sweet guy. He's helped us around the house and he watched our dog while we were away last month. But he rang our doorbell at 10:30pm last night to borrow a tool. Who does that? We were both already in bed. Why not try calling first before you come over and scare us? (Yes, the doorbell ringing at 10:30pm scares me because I'm a worrywart and I think that it's the police telling me someone is dead).

When he returns it, I would just say that we settle down early, so next time please wait until morning or come over before 9pm or something. Since I'm not like that with neighbors, I would be pissed.
  • When I was a kid, my parents were really strict that we were never to call our friends before 10 am or after 9 pm and I've pretty much stuck to that rule, unless I know otherwise. We would both have been asleep at 10:30 pm!

  • It's definitely possible he lost track of time.

We actually were in the middle of fooling around and we both jumped up like, "What the hell!? Who's here?!?" And since FI was naked, he called out to him that he was in the bathroom and would be out in a second. So hopefully he got the hint? I don't know. I just wish he would have called first before coming over.
  • I had that same rule growing up.  I will call up to 930pm IF its family and I know they stay up late but no one else that late unless its an emergency.  And never before 830 if its a business or 9am if its personal.
