ADVENTUROUS couple in October

We don't know where we wont to go for our honeymoon. We both like the outdoors, backpacking, hiking, rock climbing etc. but we don't really want to rough it for our honeymoon. We also dont want to lay by a pool doing nothing for a week straight. Where should we go for a good adventure that wont leave us sleeping on the ground? Some place with a little culture or history would be a bonus. We like live music. We have been to Grand Cayman and loved it. Jamaica was beautiful but we didn't feel safe with all the people who haggle you. I would be afraid to get robbed if I wasn't constantly with a tour guide.

We have been talking about a few places but have some worries about each one. Maybe someone could fill me in:

Some Caribbean island sounds good but which one? I also have to worry about hurricane season, right?

Bora Bora looks too expensive. What about Moorea? What is there to do and can I do it with little money?

Where in Europe would be good? I definitely want adventure but I wouldn't mind sitting on a beach for a day. Would all of Europe be too cold for that during October?

What about New Zealand and Fiji? Is Fiji safe enough to run around and have an adventure?

Hawaii sounds fantastic but we don't like crowds. Hence the reason we like to backpack so much. Is there a beautiful place in Hawaii without people?

Any other ideas? Thanks.

Re: ADVENTUROUS couple in October

  • How much are you looking to spend?

There are quite a few recent posts about New zealand and Tahiti as well. Moorea may also be too expensive depending on the budget, as the airfare to get there is expensive and at least half of the package cost.

Fiji is also great because it can be a good mix of relaxation and activity. It can be a little less expensive than Tahiti, as the exchange rate is better and the airfare isn't usually as much.

Also, check out Kauai or Lanai in Hawaii. Lanai isn't lush, but it's quiet. Maybe even Molokai would be a fit.

  • We went to Kauai, Maui, and The Big Island for our HM. There are a lot of places you can go on the Big Island where there won't be many (or any!) people. There are a bunch of beaches that you can only get to with a 45 minute hike, or a 4 wheel drive car you don't mind getting beat up (and depending on the rains, your car might not make it).

Belize would be a good fit as well. They have great Mayan ruins to hike like Mexico & Guatemala with almost no one else there, especially in October. The only nice beaches are in Placencia, so you would have to hop around the (very small) country. It is completely safe, we took the local buses between areas. The only area that we felt uncomfortable was Belize City, which thankfully all you do is fly in there and if you are going to the Cayes, get the water taxi (the airport is fine, it was just the walk from the bus station to the water taxi that was shady. And it was a 10 minute walk, so 10 minutes out of a 10 day vacation is nothing).

  • Good ideas so far. Thanks.

We haven't set a budget on the honeymoon yet. I'm thinking no more than 6K, that includes travel. If its really worth going somewhere then we are willing to put in more money. Other than the dress, so far our parents are not putting anything towards the wedding. So more of our money will be in the wedding which limits our honeymoon.

  • Agree with the recommendation of Belize.

In the Caribbean, you could look at Aruba or Curacao, since those are less likely to be affected by hurricanes.

  • What about Costa Rica?  I hear great things about active excursions (hiking, snorkeling, zip lining, etc) and since it is not in the Caribbean you should be safe from hurricanes.

  • If you're into backpacking/hiking, I'd check out some of the guided treks from REI. There are a ton, and the guides are always awesome.

  • We've very adventurous and we're most likely going to Belize too. We're doing 5 days here:

And then 5 days at another resort yet to be determined. The second resort is going to be more relaxing/spa.
  • We're an adventurous couple as well, and we're going to Costa Rica for 11 days in February.  The excursions we are doing include whitewater rafting, waterfall rappelling, volcano hikes, ATV tour, zip lining, suspended bridges walk, full day off shore fishing, and jet ski tours.  We also have a couple of days to relax.
  • @akosakow where are you staying in Costa Rica? My friend is interested on Costa Rica for her honeymoon but isn't sure where to stay.
  • @starfirsh622 We are staying at Los Lagos in La Fortuna for 3 nights, Hotel Heliconia in Monteverde for 2 nights, and La Mansion Inn in Manuel Antonio for 4 nights.  When is your friend planning on going on her honeymoon?  I can let you know how everything was when we get back in February.
  • Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Kauai looks amazing so far! Doesn't look like a lot of crowds either. I'm going to have to do some more research on Costa Rica though. I didn't realize it had so much to do.

REI guided treks? I've been to that store so many times and attended a couple classes but I have never heard of those. I'll have to check it out.

After being on the beach of Grand Cayman, Belize's beach looks like a bit of a let down even if there is a lot of other things to do there. GC ruined me. Aruba looks nice but too desert like for my taste.

  • They are getting married in September but this they are going to wait until October. Thanks for the response.
  • @leelabear , I go to Aruba almost every summer with my family. It is very dessert. It has amazing beaches and a fun atmosphere and they really love American dollar over their own currency, so no exchange rate to be concerned about.

Also been to Costa Rica. That island is very forest and luscious. Went zip lining down a side of a foresty mountain and it was beautiful. Lots of colorful birds everywhere. It all depends on your taste!

  • Hi! I hiked Macchu Piccu and it was the most amazing thing I've ever seen. I went with a friend, not on my honeymoon but it's a 4 day hike so you could still "relax" the other few days. You must be in a tour group that has a permit from the Peruvian government, you cannot just show up and expect to hike it. So I went with GAP tours- check their website because I know they have other amazing adventure tours all over the world.

I also just got back from Tokyo with my fiance and that was out of this world cool. I'm not going to lie it was about $7,000 for 10 days but it was soooooo worth it.

  • We are going to Iceland in September - September/October is the shoulder season, less tourists, but you can start to potentially see the Northern Lights.  Everyone I've spoken to says it is the most amazing place no matter when you go.
