Probably a silly question-Travel Related

Would you classify a lotion as "liquid"?

Yes, I'm serious.  Laugh away.

The whole tsa.gov site says "Liquid or gel".  So of course I'd rather just classify lotion as neither, because I want to not put it in the quart bag.

This is what my life has come to.

Yes, it is a liquid to the TSA.
  • Also, this app might be helpful.  I do not speak from experience - I haven't tried it.

  • I looked at that Taw, and really I'm sad I can't bring my nun-chuks or ninja throwing stars.
  • Or crowbar.  Those can be handy.
  • I once watched a TSA agent throw away a woman's cheese because he said it was liquid. o_O So yes, lotion is liquid.
  • Lotion = liquid.  On my last trip I got confused by mascara.  I ended up keeping it in my makeup bag in the carryon with an extra stashed in my checked luggage in case it got tossed.  It passed and was one less thing I had to put in the 3-1-1 bag.

  • Yeah, MNNE-I think toothpaste and mascara will stay out of the bag.
  • Toothpaste is a liquid. Makeup items generally do not count (depending on the airport sometimes they will hassle you about lip gloss). I keep a travel sized lotion in my purse and I always forget to put it in my quart bag- I've never been stopped by TSA and told to take it out. They are really inconsistent.
  • they've never confiscated my hand sanitizer or makeup (lipgloss/mascara/etc.) from my purse - i always forget to take that stuff out.

... actually thinking about it, there's been at least 2 times where I've left my quart bag of liquids inside of my carryon bag, and they didn't even question it. things get to be a bit crazy when you're taking a toddler through security.

If it's pricey, you probably don't want to chance it. You could try the "lotion wipes" for the plane and pack the bottle in your checked bag.
  • I'm not checking a bag, and thus the liquid pinching issue.

So...I will put my toothpaste in there, and leave in my lotions, and foundation.

If I want anything checked, I will send it with H, and do without for a few days.
  • I can tell you for a fact lotion is a liquid, per TSA. I had been visiting family for Christmas and one of my gifts was a fancy body lotion.  Put it in my carry-on not even thinking about it and it was a no-go at security.  Luckily, I had checked my suitcase in at the counter less than two minutes before and was able to run back and put my lotion in it.
