NWR: I freaking hate flying.

edited November 2013 in Chit Chat
Is anyone else with me? I know it's ridiculous and irrational, but I recently have begun to HATE flying. I've flown my entire childhood, teenage years and college years with no problem, but in the last six months I've grown to hate it. I had a really bad flight experience back in April with severe turbulence and several people got injured. Ever since, I've been so squeamish about it. FI is flying to see me in a few weeks and I'm even stressed/upset that he is going to be on a plane.

I know that you're more likely to be struck by lightning, attacked by wild animals, etc., etc. than be in a plane crash. But I still hate it. I'm trying to get over this before we book our honeymoon. I don't want to spend my wedding day stressing about getting on a stupid plane.

Re: NWR: I freaking hate flying.

  • Well I don't hate flying per se, but I do hate the whole going to the airport 1.5 hours ahead of your flight, taking off pretty much everything and stuffing it in bins (oh and don't forget taking your laptop out of its case) and waiting in security lines, etc, etc.

It is understandable with your experience to be hesitant or even hating to fly.  I would probably talk with your doctor now and about your fear and see if there is something he can recommend to you or even prescribe to help relax you so you aren't so worried prior to and when up in the air.

I think if you have a plan in place for when you do have to fly for your HM you won't be so worried about it in the days leading up.

Yeah. I'm kind of hoping I get over it on my own without needing drugs or anything. Because seriously, I used to fly four or five times a year and never cared a bit. I think I just need to get over the bad experience. I'm sure I'll end up having to fly again before our honeymoon for work or something in the next couple months. I just don't want to be the white knuckled person who needs the stewardess to calm her down.

Maybe I should just get hammered. Like Bridesmaids.

Totally with you on the airport rigamarole. Gag. Especially the Atlanta airport.
  • It sounds like that previous experience was really tough on you-- maybe seeing a counselor to talk about it would help.  I had (who I am I kidding, still have) some post trauma symptoms after Hurricane Sandy and it really helped to talk about it, no drugs required.

  • I hate to fly. I talked to my doctor, she prescribed me an anti-anxiety drug and told me to take it an hour before my flight.

  • I hate flying.  Especially terrified of takeoffs.  I was fine when I was a kid.  This has only surfaced the past 10 years or so.  I refuse to let it stop me from traveling though....we travel quite often for vacation.  Our honeymoon had a total of 7 flights!
  • I feel you on this. In college when I studied abroad, I flew across the Atlantic four freaking times and thought nothing of it. Last time I was on a plane, it was an hour-long flight to a friend's wedding, and I was terrified. No idea what happened there, because the other flights were just fine, no turbulence or anything.

I feel like we can be our own worst enemies on this stuff - just thinking about all the possible things that could go wrong. You had a scary experience, so I agree with PP that maybe just talking to someone about it and getting that fear into words might help. I know the next time I fly I'm going to talk to my doctor about getting some meds for the experience, but I totally understand why you might not want to do that. :)
  • I have 3 little words for you...at-i-van baby!    I am a very nervous flyer and it helps me alot.  A very small dose so that you are good to go when you land.
  • Flying doesn't bother me, but I'm not overly fond of the process. Getting to the airport early, being squished in coach with fellow paupers (joke) who can't afford business class, the tiny bathrooms, etc.

You should definitely find out if you can get something prescribed to help you relax a bit.

  • I'm not scared to fly, but I do hate it.

I can't stand being cramped, going through security, the smell of the plane, and I always get headaches.

Just a caution. Anti-anxiety pills have side effects and may cause negative reactions. The wrong drug can make you act like a drunk person--not what you want when you're traveling! If your doctor determines you need anxiety medication but have
never taken it before, I suggest making sure you find out what does/does not work for you *before* you try to fly.

  • Last night I had a dream I was in a plane crash, but everyone survived. It was oddly comforting. I know everyone thinks if a plane crashes, the party's over, but the only statistic that has comforted me is that 95% of people in plane crashes survive. For some reason that assures me more than the fact that your odds of being in a plane crash are 1 in 38 million.

I know my logic is awful.

Not awful! That is the most comforting thing ever!

I must lead a sad life to be so invigorated by this statistic, lol.
  • I don't need meds to get me through it, or anything, but I hate flying.  I get on plane and go from point A to point B, but I'm not really convinced it's possible. I feel like the entire time I'm  in the air I'm wondering, in the back of my mind,  if I'm about to die. You'd never know if you sat next to me though.

I also hate the tiny close spaces and how everyone is crammed it.   I'm very claustrophobic.

Airports though, I love airports.  My dad live in Europe when I was a kid so I traveled by myself from 10 years old on and used to spend hours alone in airports on long layovers people watching and making up stories about who they were and where they were going.  Love love love airports.

Thank you! I tried studying the mechanics of flight to help me get over this, but if anything it made me more terrified. It just seems like this precious combination of lift, force, thrust and drag ... !
  • i'm terrified of flying, but do it regularly, for work and leisure travel. xanax and benadryl (what i like to call: "xanadryl"), is my friend. gets me through it.

  • I am terrified of flying (even booking the flight gives me anxiety), but I have to every now and then for work.  A few months ago was my first flight in years.  I actually held a senior managers hand because I was freaking out!  Every sound she explained what it was to calm me down, which helped.  Later she admitted she made most of it up! Once we could turn on electronic devices, I had downloaded comedies I like to watch to lighten the mood.  My fiancé flew to the location separately and on the flight home he bought me a stuffed animal to commemorate the trip.

My next work trip is coming up and I've already warned my co-workers I'll be the adult clutching that stuffed animal on the plane.
As terrified as I am during takeoffs, I couldn't imagine holding my senior manager's hand.  It's a professional relationship and just seems very weird.  Have you sought any kind of therapy?

There is also a website called fearofflying.com that is great just for the forums alone.  Many questions are answered by an airline captain.  I used to read stuff on there and found it helpful.
