Save the Date wording

I recently found and designed a save the date on wedding paper divas. I love the design but it doenst include the words "formal invitation to follow." I know  most of the Save the Dates I've received have included it. Yet, the design im looking at doesnt have a spot for it. Is it necessary to include?

I am doing a double sided Save the Date, the front will be the save the date and the back will be a holiday card. I may include a card that states for more information please visit our wedding website. If i do that, should i just add formal inviation to follow on the card?

Re: Save the Date wording

  • You don't need it. As long as it say save the date (or something to the effect) people will know to expect a formal invite. :)

It's not necessary to include it, but if you can find a spot to insert free text, I think it might be helpful. Depends on your crowd, but most people understand what STDs are and that a formal invitation is forthcoming.

  • "Formal invitation to follow" is implied, so it's not necessary.  I would recommend including your website somewhere though, especially if some of your guests are traveling.  I usually have to fly for weddings, and being able to check a couple's website to see if they recommended a particular hotel helps me plan my trip before the invitation arrives.
  • My save the date design was the same way, and I just left "Formal invitation to follow" off. I did include a small card to direct people to our website for more information, since the actual save the date (magnet) only had minimal information. I just bought some nice cardstock and printed the additional cards at home.

As PPs mentioned, I think most people know to expect a formal invitation after they receive a save the date. Good luck :)
  • I know i would assume its included, but i know save the dates are a newer trend and a few older generations may get confused. Is there any ettiquette rules on it?
  • My STD didn't have a spot for that either. I didn't include it.
  • My save the date was a really simple/straightforward magnet. It did not include "formal invitation to follow", but it did have our wedding website on it. The only person who was confused was my 93-year-old grandmother. She was actually pretty upset about it. She sent me an email telling me that my invitation didn't have enough information on it, and she was wondering what the dress code would be. Huh, grandma?

Everyone else, ages 22-70, got it.
