DIY "Shaped" Wedding Invitations...Cute or Tacky???

We are planning a wedding for next December and are having a hard time choosing invitations to send to our guests..the problem is we can't find any that really fit our "rustic chic winter wedding" theme and who we are as a couple.  I am a very crafty person and would LOVE to hand make all of our invitations.  My idea was to make mitten shaped invitations out of scrapbooking paper/cardstock (one side would be in a "Fair Isle" pattern, the other just plain with all of the invite information) and sew the two mitten shapes together (leaving the top part open like a real mitten so we could stuff it with an RSVP postcard) to make one mitten...

Soooooo what do you think?  Cute or tacky?

    I made my own, and I like them.  If someone else thinks they are tacky, then that is a shame, because I wanted to put a personal touch on invites.  But I think it is a nice idea if you want to do it. 
    Just keep in mind how many invites you will have to make and how time-consuming it will be.  My original plan was much more elaborate, but I cut it back because making so many invites is a lot of work in itself.  Having the word "sew" in your plan, speaking as someone who has hand-sewn whole outfits . . . it might not be feasible. 
    Also, I'm a fellow winter bride!

    I have never seen wedding invitations like this.  One couple had mitten save the dates (http://loveleighinvitations.blogspot.ca/2012/11/work-wednesday-bridget-tom.html).  I think if you would like to make your own invitations, you should at least try.  However, depending on how many people you are inviting, it might get quite time consuming, frustrating, etc.
    On the other hand, you can always have invitations designed and made for you.  Or, here are some other suggestions:

    That sounds really cute, especially if you're having a casual wedding. But if you're having a more formal event, I think it might be out of place.

    I definitely wouldn't call it tacky. My only concern with design is that it might be cute to the point where it might look too childlike. Because mittens are pretty darned cute. (My daughter got an Anthropologie gift card last year in an actual little mitten, and it was adorable. Applause for great packaging.) So without being able to see an actual prototype, I would say it depends on your personalities (a mitten says lighthearted and fun, to me) and the style/formality of the rest of your wedding. If I get a mitten invitation, it would lead me to expect informal. But there's nothing about the idea that I would call tasteless or tacky.

    That sounds really cute!  Just be sure all the info you need to share fits.  Also, I suggest you start early.  DIY invites can be alot of work! Good luck!

    Yes, it sounds cute! You might want to make sure the result doesn't look too juvenile (like a baby shower or kids party). Otherwise, go for it!

    For a December wedding that sounds adorable, but (to me) doesn't seem "chic." Everyone's opinions are different, but I think if you have the skills to be that crafty.. Go for it.  I was invited/attended a wedding that had a book themed invite with horses.. We're doing greeting cards with all the info needed for the wedding. Anything is possible in this day and age. :)
