Dress... short or long?

I bought a dress a couple months ago and at time, really loved the idea of shortening it to tea length or just below the knee. The shop lady said it could be done and that maybe adding a layer of tool underneath might help as well. I love the idea of a short dress and think it would fit our wedding really well but whenever I look at the dress in my pictures, I also love it long and think that it is such a pretty dress the way it is. I really feel 50/50 about it at the moment and need some help deciding!

The wedding is in April so the weather could be quite cold or fairly warm where we are getting married.

Re: Dress... short or long?

  • Sorry.. file didn't work the first time. Here is the dress!
  • I like it longer TBH. I think it looks better on you - I can't really picture it in tea length.

  • I think you want to think in terms of proportions and what is going to be most flattering on your body. If you have pretty legs, then you might be happy with a shorter cut, but tea length can be an awkward hemline for many women (it can make you look stumpy). Knee-length is less formal and less traditional, so it also depends on your event.
With that lace jacket, I think tulle might be a little odd--will it be visible, or is that just to poof out the skirt?

Have you thought about adding some embellishment or a sash? That may also satisfy your creative drive to make changes because it can flatter your proportions and draw attention to your figure.
  • I have a thing for short dresses, but that's just my style. Have you tried any shorter dresses on, to know if you like tea-length on yourself?

The dress is lovely, and would look nice either way.

  • Thanks! I was worried about the proportions as well. I'm not tall (5'3) and lots of curves (some where they shouldn't be lol). I have tried on shorter dresses and really liked them, but I also am not sure if it would 100% work on this dress. I do think a sash/belt comes with it, but I'm not sure if I will wear it yet.
  • Not sure a dropped waist dress would look right short.  It might make your legs look super short.

  • Based on the dress style/material and the fact that you are a bit shorter like I am, I would highly recommend you keep the dress long.  Tea length is a hard length to really pull off nicely and I just think the dress material/style will look better long, not short.

If you still decide to go short, I definitely wouldn't add tulle.  I think you'll look more like a ballerina with a tutu than a bride!
  • Ok... thanks everyone! I have been thinking that it would look better long but I guess I just loved the idea of a short dress (Not that I don't love this one!). I've decided to get it trimmed so that there is no train and it just brushes the floor as I can't stand the idea of a train and don't think it would work that well for the wedding we have planned anyways. But it will still be long!

    Thanks for the help. :)
