Costco labels The Bible as 'fiction'

http://business.time.com/2013/11/20/costco-apologizes-for-labeling-bibles-as-fiction/?hpt=hp_t3

Oopsie.

But really, it's not that big of a deal.  It wasn't a statement, just mislabeling...which happens ALL.THE.TIME.

Re: Costco labels The Bible as 'fiction'

  • I sometimes wonder why our culture's 'root for the underdogs' thing (which I like) leads to people being t all "help help I'm being oppressed" martyrdom.

When I first read the story this week, someone linked to this:  http://www.peacock-panache.com/2013/11/foxs-starnes-continues-attack-on-costco.html
And the first comment is spot on (the one that ends with "If Todd Starnes was an actual journalist, instead of a propagandist, he would have discovered this himself; it took me 10 minutes to track down the information, probably about a tenth of the time it took Mr. Starnes to pen this article.""
  • Dixie- I did have the thought of, "Some people probably think that's spot-on."

  • I think it's spot-on.  Hell, I think a lot of christians think it's spot on since they all seem to argue over literal vs. allegory all the time.  Well...WTF is an allegory?
  • Catholic signing in to say I don't believe every word penned in it.
  • Oh I don't believe every word of the Bible.   Plusalso, I haven't read most the words in the Bible anyway.  Reading or studying it has never really held any interest for me.
  • I wonder if there would be the same level of outrage if another religion's holy text was labelled as fiction. Christians really know how to get indignant and their panties in a bunch. Maybe Sunday shopping trips there will be easier now if they all decide to boycott Costco.
  • FFS, there is a whole OTHER book in Judaism that is just commentary on the text of the Torah and interpretation. Not to mention the book of Midrash that is stories that happened in between the stories in the Torah.
  • Bibles, along with other religious works and collections of mythology are in the non-fiction section of the library. For reference, from Wikipedia:

"Non-fiction is a story based on real facts and information . Non-fiction is a narrativeaccount, or other communicative work whose assertions and descriptions are believed by the author to be factual. These assertions and descriptions may or may not be accurate, and can give either a true or a false account of the subject in question, however, it is generally assumed that authors of such accounts believe them to be truthful at the time of their composition or, at least, pose them to their audience as historically or empirically true. Reporting the beliefs of others in a non-fiction format is not necessarily an endorsement of the ultimate veracity of those beliefs, it is simply saying it is true that people believe them (for such topics as mythologyreligion)."
  • Um, no they're not.

Greek mythology is usually put into 300, specifically 398 = folklore

Bibles are in class 200, which is religion and specifically 220, which is the Christian bible.

"Non-fiction" isn't exactly a correct characterization of the Dewey Decimal system.

Agreed. Btw when I saw this article on the news, I immediately thought of you, V ;)

  • *snort* @ Dharma.

Honestly, while this strikes my funny bone, I don't really care.

I care far more about Greece v. Galloway and the newest lawsuit filed in MO re: a teacher who told her students during class that if they didn't behave God would punish them.
  • meh. Liberace wrote a biography that was placed in non-fiction. guess what. he wrote a fictional account of his life.

placement in a boook store or library doesn't necessarily mean anything. if we go into the christian bookstore, they have photos of jesus riding a dinosaur. does that make it true?

  • Wait. Since when does Costco label the books? I just see them all out on the tables. Sure, they put like with like, but I've never seen a label.

(Also? Costco can label me "trash to read on the plane" and I won't give a fuck because I'm in Costco, bitches!)
